I could see people turn down Yale and Princeton for ISP, HPME, or other programs. I think it would be a good decision to turn Yale or Princeton down for Medill if Journalism is your passion. Also, if you love northwestern, you might as well turn down any other school, right?

yeah..

.

kk191 what were you reasons for turning down those schools? I would have personally turned down Penn and Cornell, but Yale would have been hard. Are you satisfied with your experience at Northwestern?

Right, many laymen recognize Northwestern because of its Big 10 sports programs, which may further contribute to the stuffy, academic reputation of University of Chicago.

NU is a great school and offers many opportunites one cannot get at Chicago. That's fine, if you're looking for one of those opportunities (e.g., journalism or engineering).

Anyways, people sure don't know their history! Much of modern football, especially college football, comes right from the University of Chicago. Knute Rockne said, "All football comes from Stagg."

lol I don't see University of Chicago on there.

-Well, I turned Yale down because New Haven wasnt my kind of town; I prefer the Evanston/Chicago area. Also, I really loved Northwestern- more so than any other institution at the time. The quarter system, campus, and size- pretty much everything about NU pleased me. While yes, Yale is more prestigious, Northwestern seemed to have a more pre-professional yet laid back atmosphere, which is exactly what I wanted in a school. And coming into college, I wanted to study journalism something that changed VERY quickly, but never the less, Im happy with the poli sci dept.

There are of course those "what if" times, but Im pretty sure If given the chance, Id do it all over again. Go 'Cats! :)

Look more carefully: "Chicago 1892-32." Stagg was coach at Chicago from 1892-1932, during which time Chicago was a founding member of the Big Ten Conference. The first-ever Heisman Trophy, won by a University of Chicago student, sits in a glass case in the entrance to the school's athletic center. Kids these days.

Chicago dropped out of the Big 10 after only 50 years... I guess it couldn't take the pressure from the REAL football teams. lol

a U of Chicago President chose to end football at that school in the 30's or 40's because he wanted the students to focus more on academics than sports, not because they had a bad team (I actually think they had a great team back then) . Quite honestly, I think there are many universities out there that would be better off cutting back on sports to spare their academics...many non-CCer's do not understand that college is about academics, and sports are secondary, not the other way around

I wonder how different UChicago would be today if that decision were never made.

Go U CH! CH! CH! CH! Whats CH for? Methane!!!!!

-A Chicago cheer.....

"First of all, no one should take rankings seriously. UChicago is known throughout the world, and people think very, very highly of it."

Why is it always the people who's schools are ranked lower who tell you rankings are crap and then go on to tell you why your (obviously higher ranked) school is crap also...

While Chicago is not my school, I really think UChicago is an exception to what you mention above...ask any college expert or well-educated layman, and he/she will tell you that the University of Chicago Academics rank up with Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. The rankings are based on partially on admissions, and Chicago has a differant idea of admissions than most other school. I am not saying that the rankings are crap, I am saying that the rankings value criteria that CHicago does not value...I know people who have been reject by chicago who have been accepted to top ivys, because to CHicago, essays are more important than test scores, and i really do not feel that choice makes chicago any less of a top school.

I honestly don't see why we need to hear how UChicago got robbed by US News, how it's "rank up with Harvard, Yale, and Princeton" (LOL! keep telling yourself that)...blah blah ON NW BOARD.

no need to be a jerk about it...if you do not like that this thread is talking about U of Chicago, no one made you read it.
by the way, i didn't say Chicago was robbed by US News, and i specifically said that I did not think that. I also did not say that I thought U of Chicago ranks up with HYP...I said that many college experts believe that U of Chicago ACADEMICS are just as strong... I do not want to get in a fight about this, I just do not like it when people go out of their way to make other look stupid becuz they have nothing better to do...

Aw, Sam Lee isn't a jerk. He's probably the most valuable and informative poster on the NU forum. Maybe he was just having a bad day.

Fortunately, academics is not the single determining factor of a college's quality.

Well said.

very true.

Earlier somebody posted that Berkley is more well known, etc and that NU isnt very well known outside of the midwest. My first answer to these people is that they are complete idiots. I am beyond depressed that i am even on this website, but, having an internship mean i dont do shi*. Anyways, Kellogg alone would makes NU known in everywhere, not to mention that the law and med schools are internationally respected as well. Furthermore, the undergrad programs have many that are considered at the top in those areas. So, to all the douchebags who constantly look to the name of a school or if it is an ivy etc, i reiterate what i just said, douchebag. How about this: NU is a great school that is well respected outside of the the midwest. Dont compare us to a school like Uchic or where ever...does it really matter once you get to the top tier schools all that much?
