hey lunknot, can u tell me why u chose NU over wellesley? i know the HPME program is amazing, but other than that were there any factors that affected your decision? i'm debating between the two right now.

Nu's HPME over Brown PLME, Rochester REMS, Harvard, Stanford, Emory Scholars, UT Plan II and Deans Scholars, and Rice/Baylor <-- the last one was painful

luknot, and i thought i had applied to a lot of schools lol !!

isnt brown plme same as nu hpme??

ilabcurious1423 - Definitely go to Princeton! It really is a great school; screw what people say about it being pretentious! My interviewer was sooo amazing and down to earth; I didn't feel as though I was being judged at all. I actually haven't been there (to see the campus), but I felt very wanted by them. I feel that they do a great job of giving students personal attention. I think you'd do great there. You should really go if that's where you want to go; don't listen to the negative things people say.

hwc23 - Honestly, I applied to Wellesley because I thought an all female atmosphere would foster intellectual development way better than a co-ed one; last year, I was extremely worried about getting the shaft because i'm a woman in science and honestly there aren't too many of us. Wellesley has a GREAT science/research program (i dont know if that's your interest though). Wellesley sends a lot of love. Then I realised that i'd hate being around girls 24/7 no matter how amazing and interesting they were. I pride myself on loving diversity and being open, so I want to have some guy friends as well as girls.

I chose NU, in the end, based on HPME, the fact that i've wanted to go there since middle school, and because of my visit to the campus. The people i've met on my two visits were great and approachable; I could see myself wanting to be around them daily. The campus is gorgeous, it's near chicago, I felt a connection to the community, I already feel as though I "fit in", I got a lot of love from the admissions ppl, and i've already made friends. I couldn't ask for more. well... jk

Ask any more, specific questions if you like.

go48 - It is...but it's not.

Brown - Ivy league, 8 yrs, BA or BS/MD, integrated (you get both degrees at the END of the 8 years), no MCAT, Brown's med school is comprised of all PLME or Brown phd/md

NU - In a league of it's own, 7 yrs, BA/MD, NOT integrated (you get BA after 3 years and MD after another 4 years), no MCAT, way more flexible, better location, more variety in medical school class

hope that helps =)

you mean brown plme you started med related stuff from day 1 vs hpme u do whatever u want for 3 years then u get serious about med ?

Lunknot-well I havn't been accepted yet! I sure hope that I get in! I was just curious if there was any other reason that you would have turned it down. Doesn't Harvard have a good undegrad pre-med program? I have never really been interrested in medicine...I was just wondering. Also did you ever consider Duke or Johns Hopkins?

thanks, lunknot. i actually AM interested in math/science, so its nice to hear that wellesley has a great science/research program, i havent heard that too much. i think i am going to choose wellesley...for me, the individual attention and class sizes were the deal breaker. hopefully the all girls situation doesnt come back to bite me in the butt come september =)

go48 - precisely

ilabcurious1423 - well, at my school I can only miss 15 days per semester and still GRADUATE. Before I even knew about what colleges I was accepted into, I used up about 13 days on scholarship related interviews, which I don't regret because now I don't have to pay for college. Then I went to NU for 2 days... so I couldn't go to any of the other programs. Because I had a feeling for what NU would be like (went there in Feb), and because I liked it, I just decided on it. I heard Princeton is gorgeous! Maybe going to visit and speaking to students and well as faculty would have changed my mind. Through all this college decision stuff, I didn't stress out (except when it seemed like i'd never get my HPME letter). I didn't think too much about it honestly. When I got the letter (HPME), I cried; it was the only acceptance that made me cry, that made me so happy I cried. . .so that told me where I should go. I loved NU, got great FA, got HPME...I'm set. I didn't worry about even LOOKING at the others. Oh yes, and later on when I was having doubts...haha....I talked a 2nd yr med student in HPME (she interviewed me) about Browm PLME vs NU HPME (she applied to both). . .HPME came out on top, and I put that doubt to rest.

hmc23 - Wellesley sent me something in the mail (in December!) last year about their science prog. as well as the new equipment they have, etc. It really made me want to apply. You should call and just request literature on their science and research opportunities as well as their viewbook.

ilabcurious1423 - prestige doesn't mean that much to me. I mean, when i'm a doctor, I plan on opening a clinic/hospital in Jamaica and living in a bungalow on the beach. . . you think i'm joking, but i'm actually quite serious. This is the plan anyway.

Doesnt Hopkins have a high suicide rate. . .
Duke is awesome; I have a friend, who is a current freshman, and she loves it. She always tells me how great it is. It's just not for me.

I sent my deposit to NU. Do i have to do anything for HPME part. I am confused

you have to send a letter to Dr. Spies at the HPME office stating your intention to enroll in HPME, dance887. btw, try to keep HPME related posts in the HPME thread...

WashU, Tufts, Vanderbilt, Tulane (20k per year scholarship), Boston Colloge, Rensselaer.

I'm pickin Hopkins over Northwestern if i get accepted off the waiting list.

Freakish-
why did u pick NU over Cornell?

A bunch of reasons. Pros for Cornell were that ( I know it shouldnt mean much) but it is an ivy league school and I think I might like the intellectual atmosphere, but overall- I decided that they were pretty much equal in academics, evanston is much better than ithaca, and being near chicago is even more of a huge plus, not only for social life and sanity ( I didn'y want to be soooo isolated at Cornell), but also for internship opportunities. I'm not exactly sure what I want to do, but I think I might want to do something in film/tv possibly so at Northwestern, I can transfer into their school of communications, which is really good, and double major with radio/film/television and psychology ( or another subject) in Weinberg. I like that the campus isn't as big as Cornell's (although I think I might've liked Cornell's campus a little more). Hmm-what else. I liked Cornell's colors better ( Red>purple) but thats pretty insignificant, as is the fact that I have a stupid stigma against being in the Midwest. But I just think Northwestern is a better fit for me, overall.

i chose NU's Medill School of Journalism over USC's Annenberg and Syracuse's Newhouse. =]

a bit unrelated, but for those that sent in the check does it say "yes" on the "Tuition and Housing Deposits Received" pat of the website?? sent mine in, still says no.. cant imagine it takes too long to process..

unilke most everyone here, i did not apply to any Ivies because a) they've never appealed to me b) i doubted my chances, and b) everyone i knew was applying to them also. i'm part of an extremely competitive class, the best class overall my school has seen and will see in years...and how many of the dozens of people i know who applied to Ivys actually got in? two.

personally, i know the Ivies hold prestige in this country, even this world, but i feel that if you're not going to fit in with the atmosphere or the social scene, then it's not worth considering. i'd rather be happy overall than go to an Ivy and hate it there. but that's just me.

but anyways, my other options were Hofstra University, Long Island University, and Emerson College in Boston, which was my top choice for the longest time. i even was one of 24 out of 500+ auditioners who was accepted into their musical theatre program. but after realizing i didn't want a conservatory-like training and all of my theatre teachers advised me i could do better at NU, i decided this is where i should be. it's a long way from CT, but i'm sure i'll love it.

go48, it takes a couple days to process the check if you just sent it in. My "yes" didn't appear until about 4-5 days afterwards...
