My gripes/questions:

-I have yet to take the SAT II's, and I didn't do so well on the SAT I (equivalent to a 26 on the ACT). If I take the subject tests, I'll also send out my bad SAT I score. Should I take the SAT I again, or just move on?

-Say I score lower on the ACT with writing. Is my 30 without writing useless? Can I submit my 30 on my original ACT and submit the writing as a separate entity, or would I be out of luck?

-If I apply early, am I allowed to submit my latest ACT scores (say, I take the ACT in December) to NU?

I won't evaluate chances (considering that you are my competition for ED this year and I have absolutely no clue to be honest) but I believe the latest test scores you can submit is from the October test date if you apply ED.

If you want to submit your ACT score, Northwestern will only accept it if you took the writing section. I would get on that soon as the last time you can take the ACT/SAT for consideration at ED is in October and the registration deadlines are coming up soon. Also, remember that if you apply to Northwestern ED and do not get accepted, you will not get deferred to RD.

i wouldnt worry too much about the test this weekend, im sure your score will be around a 30 or 31 with the writing. Just make sure you get all that shi* done soon because if NU is your number one, ED is much better way to go. Higher acceptance rate and a little bit lower avg test scores, plus you dont have to do shi the rest of the year.

your writing on ACT doesn't lower your ACT score...your ACT score and your ACT writing scores are 2 seperates scores, so don't worry about that. a 30 gives you like...minimal chance at NU though, so work on that essay!

wrong, scribbledhearts. a 30 is within NU's middle 50% (29-32) which means 25% of accepted students scored lower than a 29 and 25% of accepted students scored above a 32. so no, it absolutely does not minimize your chance at NU with a 30. I would say that is a great score for NU, you should be proud of that score.

laxguy783, you realize that 27% of people who got into stanford had an ACT score of 23-29...so are you saying a 30 gives you more than 27% of getting into stanford?

the people who have lower than 31 (the average of NU) usually have really good SAT scores or hooks.

This is Northwestern, not Stanford. And no, that's not what the statistic means and it's not the point I was making. The point is that a 30 is within the range of 50% of NU's accepted students...which is a very good number. I'd be interested to hear about these people who "usually" have really good SAT scores or hooks if their ACT score is a lowly 30. this is not an accepted fact.

normally the people who are accepted but are on the lower end of the SAT score range have something else going for them (URM, athlete, legac...etc.) so you can't compare yourself to the lower 25%.

But on the flipside maybe (just maybe) the people on the upper end of the score range had not much else going for them ...though its not very likely
