So what's the catch?

I guess everyone has a different concern. My older daughter went to a small liberal arts college where you could live on campus for four years. By their junior year though, most kids were tired of dorms-- and dorm food-- and moved off campus. I think Elon’s housing is just fine. My daughter is in one of the older dorms-- not the oldest-- which I hear will be replaced. It’s certainly not fancy, but I think it’s more than fine.

My only problem with Elon is the lack of diversity. They are working hard to change that, and I’m sure it will improve.

My daughter loves Elon, by the way.

I agree with BLK616, as I also have a older s who attends a small liberal arts college that requires students to stay on campus all 4 years. He is currently a senior and would of loved to been able to move off campus at least his senior year. S2 in a freshman at Elon and loves it! S2 was accepted at many higher level schools with serious merit money however never considered them because he loved Elon and knew it was the school for him. We were concerned, however every concern was put to rest this past weekend while visiting him for family weekend. We were amazed at all Elon has to offer its students, the involvement of the faculty and how they keep the campus so beautiful and clean. We are thrilled that he is so happy and has adjusted so well to college life!

Not that there is anything wrong with Elon but if you are driving from NY look at Univ of Richmond- it has the same feel but not as southern. Beautiful campus, sports, dorms- I would say it is more like Elon than Wake is in some ways. Worth a look,

Here’s an article from Elon’s newspaper, the Pendulum, on the Admissions Office’s expectations for the Class of 2015. They are definitely trying to increase diversity:

^ Thanks for posting - I think the article said it very well… Elon only wants to be Elon… How cool is that…

Hello all…my first time posting. We live on the west coast, and S2 is a high school senior. He too feels that Elon is a perfect match in every way, and I do agree that it seems pretty ideal “on paper”. We have not visited yet, but he is applying EA, and also applying to one of the fellows programs. Our plan is to visit if he is accepted to Elon, on the fellows weekend if he is being considered for the program. We obviously live a great distance from No. Carolina, and do not have family or friends on the east coast. He has attended a national conference in No. Carolina the past two summers, and fell in love with the area and the people. I do have a couple of concerns, if anyone can help me. How is transportation to and from the airport? Do you feel like Thanksgiving break is long enough to comfortably make the trip to California and back? I also do not know much about the area. Are there doctors, dentists and the like in Elon, or would he need to go further? And would he be able to navigate that without a car?
Thank you in advance for any guidance you can give us. S1 is at a large university about 2 1/2 hours from home, with a car, so we haven’t encountered these issues.

Hi westcoastlatte:

Elon’s Thanksgiving break starts when classes end on Tuesday, and ends Sunday night.

Transportation to/from airports:

Navigating without a car (my D says this isn’t as easy as she’d like it to be, but she only knows 2 other kids in her frosh class with cars and they’re all surviving  ):

My daughter has discovered she needs to book the Zipcars pretty far in advance. She has resorted to cabs on occasion to get to her volunteer service site in Burlington if the Zipcars (Elon has 3) are booked up.

As for doctors, dentists etc… she hasn’t had a need yet, but there seem to be plenty in Burlington. Alamance Regional Medical Center is a fairly good-sized hospital in Burlington. The town of Elon itself is tiny, but it blends into Burlington which has every shopping center, store and restaurant you can imagine.

As mentioned above, Elon and Burlington are really contiguous, so plenty of medical services available. DD had a medical issue arise but health clinic was closed. She called campus safety, who told her where she could go, and offered to take her there and stay with her if needed. (It wasn’t; she soon felt better.) They also called her after an hour or two to check on her condition. Pretty impressive.

I hope you are able to visit and that you will like it as much as we do. Let us know your impressions!

Lafalum & merkur -
Thank you so much for the information! Your input has made me feel much more comfortable. Living where we do, we are all reliant on our cars as our means of transportation. And merkur, your input on the assistance during the medical issue your DD experienced is very reassuring.
Elon really does sound pretty close to “perfect”, for what our needs and wishes are.

We too live far and I was worried about transportation. My freshman d has not found it to be a problem. In addition to those forms of transportation mentioned previously, she feels a lot of students have cars. When I expressed worry if she missed the biobus at break, she calmly reassured me that any number of her friends would pick her up at the airport if she is stuck. One is already taking her there. It is an inconvenience but is not a deal breaker.

The University is very aware and is trying to increase diversity on campus.

In regards to housing, off campus housing is really close, plentiful and seems reasonable. I too would have liked all 4 years on campus. However, I am glad off campus housing seems simple. My other child went to large state school and was worryong about housing in October for the following year. I may be wrong but that doesn’t seem the case at Elon.

Just came back from Parents weekend. The best part of this University is it cares about your stuent and they show it in many different ways. Just meeting with her teachers - wow. They really know their students - quite impressive.

Another supposed “catch” with Elon is their somewhat limited financial aid. They are working on addressing this as well, both with additional fundraising for scholarships and converting some merit aid to need-based aid.

Of course, Elon’s low price tag is almost a form of FA for all students. Elon takes a much smaller percentage of current tuition income to use for FA than most colleges, and that is expected to continue.

Westcoastlatte,

I thought I might address your question about medical services. My S1 is a junior MT major and routinely visits the campus health center for sinus infections, sore throats, etc., that can interfere with his singing. They are pretty vigilant there about testing kids with those kinds of symptoms for strep, flu, even mono. At the beginning of this year, he needed more experienced medical help for a case of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. (He had been hiking a week before going back to school). I got online and found that the area hospital has a walk-in clinic next to the emergency room, so he went there for treatment. He does have a car, so he was able to drive himself there. Students are very friendly, though, and help each other out all the time with rides.

Thank you so very much for your input! I feel much more comfortable with the possibility of sending my son across the country to attend Elon, due to the information you and the others have shared with me.
I spoke with one of the admissions counselors last week, and was very impressed with her accessibility and helpfulness. More and more, this school seems like the perfect fit for my son. I can’t wait to visit the campus early next year.
