I heard it's kind of bare...

there are plenty of things to do. you need to be more specific. places to eat? places to drink? places to party? etc.

Where did you hear this? This town is a music and art lover's dream. The restaurants are fantastic as well. On top of that, we have easy access to almost any outdoor activity you can think of.

Restaurants are good and diverse, some good live clubs, decent shopping, concerts, great outdoors nearby.

good live clubs?

good live clubs?
I'll see if I can rattle them off.

Small venues:
Satellite Ballroom
Outback Lodge
Millers
Atomic Burrito
Starr Hill
Gravity Lounge
Saxx (jazz)

Medium sized venues:
Paramount Theater
Jefferson Theater (old movie theater just bought by Coran Capshaw...will be a music venue in the future)

Large venues:
Charlottesville Pavilion
John Paul Jones Arena

UVa has plenty of music events, from concerts in our theaters to bands playing outdoor events and greek events.

Some of the restaurants/bars in town also have live music. Wednesday's "Music Showcase" at Orbit (on The Corner) seems to be a new tradition around here.

For DJ music, there's Rapture, Atomic Burrito, Club 216 (very popular with the LGBT community), and X Lounge.

I'm sure I've missed a few.

If you're really interested in music, go to Pollstar or Jambase and do an event search for Charlottesville. The list of concerts will be pretty long. You can also read up on arts events of all sorts, from concerts to art classes, on The Hook and Cville Weekly websites.

Well I obviously can't rely on my friend to objectively describe UVa/Charlottesville anymore, even though he's visited...(he's going to Georgetown, and I'm debating between the two schools). I'm definitely an art/music lover so I'm glad to hear there are so many venues. Do students typically stay on campus or go off for entertainment? Are there still plenty of things going on on campus during the weekend (besides partying) if I should choose to stay?

I think he/she meant what was live--yes, live music. I should have been more clear.
BTW, I was actually in Cville breifly this weekend on a very quick trip to Lynchburg. Had dinner at Thai 99 and some frozen custard. Great as usual.

going on/off grounds for entertainment depends on what you are looking to do and what mood you are in. for food - esp since newcomb is closed weekend nights - ppl go off grounds (corner, mall) and might do something else while they are there. another thing to note is our amazing free trolley and bus system around grounds and neighboring fun areas (corner, mall, barracks shopping...).

I forgot about that, Hazel! It was just announced that anyone with a UVa ID rides the bus system for free. The trolley, which makes a loop from the Downtown Mall to us, was free already, but now the buses that go up and down Rt. 29 (more shopping) are free as well.

What type of music, any particular bands? (and any grrl bands? There is only about one or so where I live)

This is very important information when picking a school!

every and any type. check out the webpages for the satellite ballroom and gravity lounge (google) they usually have a list of upcoming events if you want to get an idea.

Do you need a car to access any of this stuff or is it all within walking distance?

there are free buses and trolleys that go everywhere. :)
