so what's up with all this "hook" stuff?

what can and can't be considered a hook? anyone know any specific examples?

thanks!

URM, recruited athlete....etc

You can tell what a hook is, you just can.

Drop an example, and I'll tell you what I think.

first of all, this might be a stupid question, but what's URM?

well let's see, i might have a few:

1) I am from Argentina
2) I know five languages
3) One of top 60 golfers in state

idk...these probably don't mean anything haha

URM = under represented minority.

If you live in Argentina and aren't a US citizen or resident, you'll be considered along with the international applicant pool.

International is a bad thing, isn't it?

I think number 2 and 3 are good, but I don't think they're hooks.

what about being a special-ed student

Yes......as long as you say how you overcame it

yea thats what I'm going to say.....you think it could dramaticlly help my app for the ivies?

no, i live in illinois but my dad is from argentina and my mom is from brazil.

It's a hook if English is your second language but you have learned it well enough to display brilliance in it.

well, i did learn english in the 4th grade and i was only truly comfortable with it when I moved here in 7th grade...so idk, this might be one. as for the brilliance part, i got two A's in AP English?

if you're being recruited for golf, that's a hook.

The gold is your best chance. Talk to coaches and try to get recruited.

i dont know why...but i really don't want to play golf in college. maybe it's something I'm not worried right now, but I'm not exactly sure if I'm good enough for a division I school

A hook is something you attach to the end of a string, then puncture into someone's nostril to drag them around.

mommusic: regardin your example, I learned english as a second language at school. I go to school where the mean SAT v. score is 500, and yet I scored an 800... can that qualify as a hook? And my avergae in IB english is currently a 98

Having above average grades is good, but it happens to someone in every high school; showing superior command of the language in your essays is better.

thanks for the tip mommusic. I have yet another doubt, lol. I know that internationals have harder time in the admissions process, but does it help if I am applying as a citizen of an "exotic" ( admission-wise) country? (specifically costa rica)

Colleges are trying to build a diverse class, true, but I don't think they are trying to snag a student from every country! Sorry.
