My D is seriously considering Hopkins for the great Writing Sems major and the great open structure of the undergraduate curriculum. She also has a huge interest in theater and dance. She knows theater is a minor and has watched the program develop (online) during the past few years. Does anyone have any theater classroom experience insight?

Yeah when people think of Hopkins they don’t think theater. (Heck most don’t even think “great writing sems” only sciences). I’m more familiar with theater than dance but there is an undergrad dance group [Johns Hopkins University Ladybirds Dance Team](http://www.jhu.edu/~danceteam/)
The musical “Company” is being put on by the student group Barnstormers this weekend. Other theater opportunities include Witness theater: all plays written and directed by students, JHUT - plays directed by members of Johns Hopkins theater faculty [Theatre Arts & Studies Faculty](<a href=“Theatre Arts & Studies | Johns Hopkins University”>Theatre Arts & Studies | Johns Hopkins University)
Son has enjoyed classes with Prof Joe Martin, a scholar and translator of Strindberg [Amazon.com: Strindberg: Other Sides: Seven Plays: August Strindberg, Joe Martin: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Strindberg-Other-Sides-Seven-Plays/dp/0820436917), Marc Lapadula (who also teaches at Yale and U Penn), and of course took acting with John Astin. Astin is almost 80 but still quite active and teaches courses and directs plays. Astin, of course, graduated JHU as a math major and the faculty told him he would never make it in Hollywood but would have a great career in mathematics!
If she likes comedy, the student comedy groups Throat Culture (Saturday Night Live type sketch comedy) and Buttered Niblets (Hopkins Improv group) are always looking for more talented ladies.
However, Hopkins is not a true “theater school” like Boston University for instance. But then again it has Comp Sci majors who complete their requirements in time to do a semester of theater abroad, pre-meds who take starring roles in productions, and a chemical engineer who led one of the comedy groups for years. Feel free to PM me with any questions.
