So when are the likely letter likely to be sent out?

it seems like they did decide not to do them. i agree, lolcats4, it seems like it would be a waste to do them now! the point is to ease tension while we're waiting, but at this point we have less than a month left... uggh :(

""Nothing yet. It would be hilarious if Duke decided to just forget the likely letters.""

It is conceivable that they did send them out, but it just so happens that nobody who frequents the CC Duke forum got one.

Ready for a hilarious story, guys?

Okay, so I checked my mail today and saw this big package (about the size of an acceptance package) from Duke University. I was all excited, ran back to my house, and opened it. It was an "Apply Now to Duke" brochure about Duke graduates and whatnot...
Worst day!

True true but given past years, it seems fairly unlikely.. does anyone know anyone who got a likely? I don't.

i'm almost positive they haven't sent them out yet. we have people who get them from ivies on here, and people who get them from UVA, why would all the duke people randomly disappear? and i know a bunch of amazingly smart students who applied there and i'd be surprised if NO ONE got a letter. finally, news travels fast amongst us college-obsessed folk. i'm sure SOMEONE would have heard SOMETHING by now.

Do those Duke brochures, the Duke Graduate or whatever, mean you've probably been accepted or are they totally generic and therefore useless? I'm thinking the latter.

Exactly duckyy, it just doesn't seem like no one on CC would either get or hear of someone's getting a likely letter -- the folk here are just too obsessed.....haha, I mean that in a good way :).

Wow, there is something wrong with my posting....hmmm.

Has anyone who was deferred ED rec'd any new login info? Have you been able to check your status?

See, I thought that Duke hadn't sent out likely letters yet (like the rest of you), but I was reading in the Dartmouth group and I saw this post:

"then we are third wave likely letter

i think i may get one, cuz i got one from Duke"

doesn't that mean he/she get a likely letter from duke? what about the rest of us? :-/

He might mean one of those hispanic ones

This is so unfair --> why would they send only "likely letters" to Hispanics?

lol ^^, the same reason less qualified URMs get into top level schools over highly qualified Caucasian/ Asian applicants.

Well, it just seems like if you are going to have a multicultural weekend, why not include people of many different cultural groups (including whites and Asians)? That's just very narrow and, well, odd. Most colleges want to bring groups together, not have their own little events which don't include anyone but Hispanics......
By the way, have we confirmed that these invites are only from "Hispanic Recruitment"?

someone could call and ask. works wonders.

BigWeight had already posted to this forum on 2/27/09

"I got one. Hispanic recruitment program!!!! I AM SO HAPPY"

so looks like no other likelies have gone out... :(

^ i agree with Dpattz, why not include everybody? it's like they are making little groups and create tensions and jalousies between students already! ridiculous!!! we live in Miami and Hispanics are as white as i am... why are they classified different? in that case my D is a minority too ... she is french! we are under represented in the US!
well concerning Duke i am very disappointed with the descrimination they are doing in sending letters JUST for Hispanics and African Americans.... i feel my D is a left-over!

Guys- I doubt that Hispanics are the only ones getting likely letters - just remember that we all knew from the start that decisions were due out at the end of March. Nobody is discriminating against us- likely letters are usually for the very creme of the crop- or atheletes- and maybe internationals who many need to know this information earlier for travel etc.

So relax- remember that people fib so if you don't see a lot of people getting likely letters it's possible that someone may not be being honest- or that that they have rec'd one for a specific reason.

Duke and all the other schools are bombarded with apps- let's hope they take their time and look forward to the decisions when they told us they'd come...end of march.

LaVieEnChocolat..

This opinion from the Duke News addresses your concerns...

Time to Rethink College Recruitment Weekends

2by2, With the economic downturn maybe they are limiting likely letters because I beleive at Duke they each come with an invitation to visit Duke paid for by the University. (I could be wrong about this.)

BlueHouseMom- I agree with you - Duke has scholarship weekends where kids who are being invited to interview for Merit scholarships or at least their biggest merit scholarships. I know that I wouldn't want to be in any of their shoes right now. Having to pick and choose these very talented kids would be a nightmare. As a matter of fact I would probably have nightmares if I was an adcom.

LaVieEnChocolat- I really sense the stress getting to you. As hard as it is, try to relax and enjoy the days before the decisions come. Enjoy these next 3 weeks and don't worry about what everyone else is getting or doing. Remember the whole process isn't personal as we wish it were- they are faced with thousands of gifted, intelligent kids who are trying to put forth their best fronts. When we look at all the wonderful kids on cc- it is very humbling. I just keep reminding myself that kids seem to end up where they will thrive.
