fan why would you leave UCLA to attend cornell?!

Hi, grindallday. Are you going to UCLA this fall? Well, I can assure you most people here LOVE this campus, and I am the few “exceptions” who hate it. Sorry if that upsets you. I do have plenty of reasons to leave. Ucla is known for its crazy parties and screaming. Every midnight there are people who scream so loud, to the extent that my roomates have to shut the window before sleeping (which makes my room smell bad in the morning). This is not the main reason though. I have serious troubles with my roomates this year. One of them smokes marijuana in the room on a daily basis, and both of them have sex with random girls and basically kicked me out of the room without my consent. Other than horrible roomate issue, I feel very lonely on this campus. Apparently, I am being discriminated because I don’t go to any parties. This is what’s insane about Ucla. I am from China and we Chinese students have different ways to relax and have fun, not necessarily through parties. I also don’t like the econ professors here – most of them have horrible ratings online and some of them REALLY SUCK! I don’t want to go into details, but I would conclude that Ucla simply doesn’t have good econ department, though it has excellent departments in other fields.
By the way, right now the whole UC system has no money. I get emails almost every day from the chancellor and fin aid office, and they keep saying that “because prop xx was voted down, we have to face a 15% budjet cut next year.” The teachers’ wage are not cut, so there will be like a 40% cut on classes and programmes. Ironically, the only thing they don’t cut is student tuition/housing; we have to pay much more next school year. That’s why it’s a good time to get out of public schools.
Also, I have dreamed of going to East Coast private schools (namely Ivy League) for years. A year ago, I was almost crying when I was forced to enroll Ucla, because all private schools I applied rejected me. This year I made a lot of efforts so that I could get out of here. Fortunately Cornell takes me. I am very grateful.

If you love Ucla, that’s perfectly fine. I am not here to provoke anti-Ucla sentiment, but simply to explain why I am so desperate to get out of here.

oh wow. that really sucks. I’m sure you’ll like it at Cornell then. It seems to fit your personality more. I’ll most likely be attending USC, although I did appeal to UCLA. Is their economics program really that bad? I thought it was one of the best in the nation.

Oyyyyy, 3.5 from UCLA and you only got into Cornell. Gah, that doesn’t give me great hope if I decide to transfer from USC xD

Well I am really glad Cornell takes me. Every year the application pool gets more and more competitive. Last year Cornell ILR’s admission rate is 60%, this year I’ve heard it’s around 25%. If I apply next year I won’t get in for sure. So the earlier I transfer, the better chance I will get in.
You are from USC? This brings to another point why I don’t like Ucla. Why does Ucla make all of us hate USC? I remember when I went to Disneyland with my friend, I saw someone wearing USC hat (and I wore UCLA hat too), and suddenly I just felt a sense of hostility for no reason. I really don’t care about the sports competition between UCLA and USC.
Anyways, good luck. My GPA is really not that great. I wish I could have 4.0 and go to UPenn. But of course Cornell is good enough.

Well I am taking Econ 2 right now. I swear my Econ 2 professor is probably the worst instructor I will encounter before I leave Ucla. And sadly there is only 1 teacher for Econ 1, 2, and 41. We can’t choose an alternative professor for econ classes. Since the school is going to cut a lot classes next year, we probably can never choose alternative econ professors.
Oh I forgot to mention the size of class here. A typical GE class has around 250-300 students, sometimes more. The teachers usually don’t bother to remember students’ names, which create a sense of alienation to me. East Coast private schools usually have much fewer students per class.

fan how would you rate USC’s economics program?

I have no idea. I did not do any research about USC. And I did not apply transfer to USC. I would suggest you asking a USC econ student for more details. The only thing I know about USC (don’t know how true it is, since Ucla always blackmouths USC) is that its neighbourhood has a lot of crimes etc.

I think I am just an ordinary transfer applicant. On this thread, I’ve seen someone transferring from Cornell, and even from UPenn. On another post, I’ve seen people who try to get out of Harvard. So yeah, the world is big. People have different goals.
