How would you say UCLA’s econ department is bad when its ranked higher then cornell? lol

Rankings don’t mean anything when it comes to one’s personal taste. I hate it when people blindly guide themselves through rankings. It’s ignorant.

I only said that because he was turning off people to exploring UCLA for their econ department.

No he’s not. He’s providing his personal experience with it, which he said was bad. He’s entitled to think that. I know people who turned down Ivies for places like NYU Gallatin or Sarah Lawrence. Believe it or not, it’s not all about rankings.

Actually he is. Why don’t you try reading what he wrote before you instigate.

“I am from China and we Chinese students have different ways to relax and have fun, not necessarily through parties. I also don’t like the econ professors here – most of them have horrible ratings online and some of them REALLY SUCK! I don’t want to go into details, but I would conclude that Ucla simply doesn’t have good econ department, though it has excellent departments in other fields.”

So I guess UCLA’s econ department is bad because they have horrible online ratings so they must suck. Right…

“So I guess UCLA’s econ department is bad because they have horrible online ratings so they must suck. Right…”

Or because he took classes with those professors and thought they were horrible, and was just pointing out that they also have bad ratings online to corroborate his experience.

Jesus, it’s not that hard to extrapolate from what he posted. Dunno why you’re so rankings obsessed anyway.

I agree with kelly619. Every opinion of a department, class, major, school- or whatever, is a relative.

Anyhow, all of the posts of the people accepted to all these top universities as transfers, after bad high school records like me, was definitely a confident booster. It is going to be me next year!

OK people, I think it would be a good time to end the discussion about me and UCLA econ department. This thread is for people to post where they get in or being rejected etc.
The only reason I wrote my thoughts is because someone asked me why I transfer. And now I regret doing that. I don’t want to make a big deal about my transfer process. Like many other students on the transfer forum, I have my own reasons to transfer, and luckily one of the schools I applied is willing to take me. That’s it. If anyone thinks it is unusual for a Ucla student to leave school, well even on this thread alone, there is someone who want to get out of UPenn (which is one of my favourite schools). But that’s totally fine with me. People have unique goals and they go for them.
Also, I want to point out that I have the rights to express negative comments about my own school (or department), because I am currently in it. I make it very clear that this is just what I personally think. When I say “horrible rating,” I mean Ucla students who take econ classes give horrible ratings to some econ teachers here. And to us, the rating by the students themselves reflect teachers’ quality to a large extent. For example, my econ 2 professor has a very bad rating on the website, and guess what, I am taking his class right now and I am suffering. If you don’t believe me, this is an actual comment on BruinWalk regarding my econ 2 professor:
"You must attend his lectures to completely comprehend the extent to how poorly staffed the UCLA faculty can be. Since he is the only person teaching Econ 2, if you have to take his class, go to the first couple lectures if you don’t believe me and then only show up for exams. "
I don’t mean to discourage other people from going to Ucla econ major, but if you ask me what I would say about the econ dept here, please don’t expect me to praise about it. It is totally up to you to take my word or not. I don’t represent any other econ students here; I just represent myself. Other econ students might like the professors, who knows.
And grindallday, since you are going to USC anyways, you probably wouldn’t care about the econ dept here. Good luck on your way to USC.
And lastly, I respect people’s choices in choosing whichever college that suit them best. For me, I have made my choices and I don’t regret it. I sincerely wish everyone can go to the place where they belong to.

bit of a instate guy

now that i think of it, i should of gave berkeley, GATech, Umich a shot, i dont know why i didnt.
xD

still very happy though, i think it was a subconscious restraint because i know if i applied to all the schools i like OOS i would have gotten into one and had to pay OOS tuition…now i have no choice but to attend my instate school ;], which is what i always wanted

Kelley: I’m glad you are able to read, that is truly amazing. I was pointing out the fact that he was making claims with no legitimate support at all. He never stated why the econ department was bad. Only that their ratings were low and that he really hated them from personal experience. It’d make sense for someone to explain why they had such a bad experience, if they’re going to publicly scrutinize a well known school. Also, I could care less about ranking and less about you.

He did explain it, and he’s done with this, as am I. Please, go back to pouring over USNews and jacking it while looking at USC’s rank.

Yes… he explained it after i told him he had no explanation. Since you have nothing new to say or remotely intelligent, I’ll ignore you now since your just becoming repetitive.

3.28= Columbia? Wow…that is incredible. I am very proud of you Karbin! How did you do that? :)

Ikhan3: its because karbin is transferring from Vanderbilt. that means (and Karbin, i could be completely wrong so please excuse me and i apologize if i am assuming incorrectly, nothing to you) that 1. vanderbilt is a really competitive school so a 3.28 there means much more than a 3.28 at my county college and 2. (this is where i could be wrong, and im sry if i am) but vanderbilt is also verryy expensive, so depending what kind of financial aid karbin applied for, if his/her parents are cool with paying a big price tag, that might also lean committees towards accepting them too.

the second one is a big assumption, but the first part i think is pretty accurate. i applied to Barnard (womens school of Columbia) and didnt get in, when a 2.8 international student from Vanderbilt did. haha go figure right?
