...you know, the score below which you should retake the SAT that won't make you seem like a score-obssesed, numeric robot? January 23rd results came out today and I am not very pleased - 730CR, 800M, 720W.

I know there's another thread that asked the exact same question as mine - same score and everything, 2250 - and everyone on that thread said to retake it, but the SAT board is telling me different things - namely that above 2200, the SAT score ceases to matter.

Opinions, anyone?

I want to apply to Yale too, and I only got 2230 on the Jan 23 SAT: 790CR, 770M, 670W (got 4 on my essay -_-) and it’s my 3rd time (took the last 2 times my sophomore year), and my parents want me to retake it…

Welcome aboard, silversoul. For some reason my essay score isn’t on the score page; it’s just the 3 section scores. Hopefully that’ll show up after February 16th.

That was my first and only SAT. TBH I believe I can read and write at a higher level than would be implied by a 730/720 in CR/W so I’m almost certain I could do better, and if having a 2300+, let’s say, would up my chances, then I’d do it in a heartbeat. But would it?

And Handala - thanks. I definitely do not plan on taking it more than twice.

Back in the day before the writing exam, the word on this from my daughter’s hs counselor was that they are looking for 750s on verbal and math. I believe that they still care more about the math and verbal scores than they do on the writing. Personally, I wouldn’t retake in silversoul’s situation. It’s the third try, and verbal and math are great.
I would retake in fuzzielogic’s case to see if you can do better the second time on the CR. I believe they’ll take the best scores from both sittings.

Take it 4 times, but only if you’re positive you’ll be making major gains. Anything less than a 100 point improvement in your situation would not be significant enough to justify your taking it so many times.

I think if I got a 2250, depending on how the scores on each section looked, I would have retaken. I thought that I should have an 800 in CR and W, so if my 2250 meant I had scores lower than that, I might retake. And if I had gotten 800 on CR and W and a 650 on M, I would have undoubtedly retaken.
The score I really wanted was 2300 or higher, and even when I got that, I considered retaking.

Check the stats for accepted students. Higher scores won’t help you much at this point. I guess I can understand if you just want to see if you can get a higher score, but… I don’t know… SAT scores don’t mean much/anything outside of college admissions, for practical purposes. My overall score was less than yours and over 100 less than people I know who Yale rejected. In fact, people I know with better SATs were also rejected by the state U’s Honors program which accepted me this year.

I had posted a similar thread with a similar score a few months ago. Although the majority of the responders discouraged anyone from retaking a 2250+, I went ahead and retook and got a 2370. Personally…I think that it’s only worth retaking if you’re positive that you can jump more than 100 points. 2250 is a great score and lots of people are accepted with similar scores…and lots of people are rejected with 2350+s. So it’s up to you; in the big scheme of things, it may not even make a difference.
Oh, and I just saw that this was your first SAT. retaking one time will definitely not hurt you. When you start retaking four or five times [like me…], that’s when it starts to hurt your application.

If this is your first time and you’re confident that your score will rise, then I recommend you to retake it.
