So which are the most popular dorms?

Now is the time to sign up for housing... but I'm absolutely clueless as to which dorms to pick out. I have not visited UIUC ever, so especially for those that go there right now, which are the best dorms to pick out? It's definitely gotta be co-ed, and close to other parts of the campus preferably (at Wash U I was stuck with the farthest away dorm).

I tried doing some research but it's really hard to tell what's what. I wish they had virtual tours or something.

allen hall, isr, and six pack preferablly the peabody drive ones.
everyone apparently hates FAR and PAR. Busey is girls only.

There's also the private dorms. Bromley is close to the quad and one of the more popular ones.

why would you want the peabody drive ones? snyder is lame. Garner and Weston are closest to the illini orange bus stop... im not sure what else difference there is. also, although sixpack/allen/isr may be top pics, i doubt there is anybody that had them as their top 3... they all have their own stereotype. there have been other threads on this forum talking about the differences... in summary: FAR/PAR = minorities, Allen = liberal/gay/artsy, six pack = fraternity/sorority/social, ISR = engineers.

true but i know scott is supposedly the most popular one in the six pack. also they're right next to the stadium and assembly hall and for some big sports fans they would prefer that, right next to them. also i meant in general they're the most popular ones overall i.e. where sophomores want to live in after already being in dorms. they like isr because AC and the good food. Allen because of the atmosphere. Six pack because...if they like to party a lot. you basically here of no one wanting to live in far/par again and people in busey complain about how it's so quiet, no ones very social, etc. etc.
bromley is a coin toss, it depends on what roomate you'll get and the floor. from what i heard and have seen lots of people there like to solely party and only a handful actually try to make friends with the other people who live there. it's basically you get your circle of friends and that's it.

personally i go to class more often than i go to sporting events. i had season football and bball tickets and would still prefer garner. if sophomores want to live in scott, why would an incoming freshman want to live there? the sophs on my floor are antisocial losers contributing nothing to the floor community. as far as the air conditioning goes, you can get by just fine without it. during the day when you actually need AC, you should be at class, and at night its fine. I've heard plenty of complaints (and seen a facebook group) saying Bromley sucks. Theres like a TSA security force at the front which doesnt seem too social... the rooms are pretty badass but to be honest, im in a double in the six pack and dont use much of the room ive got. all you need is a bed/desk/closet, but the extra space in the room is good for socializing. you can actually take the door off your closet, set it across your 2 desk chairs, and play beer pong. I think you will be happy no matter where you live as long as you either have a good dorm floor community, get involved in clubs or rotc, have friends in small classes, go greek, or pretty much anything just getting involved. once you get settled in your priorities will kinda change.

Heh thanks taffy I'm gonna probably go with a six pack dorm, I am in Engineering but I don't exactly wanna be surrounded by them. So which ones exactly are the six pack.. Gregory Drive and Peabody? If that's the case I'll go with Gregory Drive. Um also what does "minorities" mean - like literally for Mexicans or Blacks etc.? I hope that doesn't mean the six packs are all white kids >_>

the six pack isnt all white, theres a little of everything, but ive just heard that par/far is heavily black/asian. Six pack is hopkins, forbes, weston, snyder, garner, scott, but when you apply for housing you say gregory drive or peabody which means you can get put into taft and van doren and those places, which arent that bad. There are engineers in the six pack, so its not like your major has to segregate you.

since the school is around 80% caucasian, heck htey are probably the majoirty in every dorm when it comes down to it. it's somewhat hard to gauge the racial makeup of each dorm unless you live there because it's not like you can see everyone who lives there at once. some people stay in there rooms more than others.

I just this weekend accepted my admission. Now I'm worried about getting housing. . . any thoughts?

Yeah, I still haven't picked Housing. For now, I'm going with:

Six-pack: Gregory Drive

ISR

?? Another six pack

I'd rather go to ISR my Junior Year or something (going abroad in Sophomore year hopefully). But I have 1 Q, when you say "Gregory Drive consists of Scott, etc.." how are they divided? Is Scott literally a seperate building, and the rest are on the same street?

Where would the other dorms be located then?

A... Question. How do the bathrooms work? Like, is it totally public bathrooms or what?

some r different than others. what do u prefer?

well... obviously private bathrooms.. but I could live with semi-private bathrooms.. I just hope they aren't public.. What kind of bathrooms are there.. for dorms?

well...none of the dorms have a communial type shower. there are stalls for toilets. sinks. if you don't want to be seen half naked you won't. they are all fairly private. at allen hall they have two stalls. a changing stall and then the actual shower. six-pack is fairly similar.

Join me at Europa House bud. :)

So.. does that mean like everyone on a floor uses one shower?

NO!! non communal means there are multiple stalls.

Haha, alright, take it easy. I was just trying to make sure... Well, that means the multiple stalls are together? like in a swimming pool bathroom or what? I wish they had a virtual tour for the bathrooms......

Hey, I was wondering, how the substance free halls are like? I don't want to be in a dorm where people are blasting loud music at 4 in the morning.. and I don't want to have people coming back at 4 in the morning either.. But I don't want the dorm to be totally dull either.. any suggestions? I've narrowed my search down to Allen Hall, Greggory, and Peabody, (maybe Snyder...).. Any help would be greatly appreciated...
