Alright, I am applying for colleges for Fall 2010. I will be a senior coming this September when school will reopen. However, I was not sure that the summer between the end of my junior year and the start of the senior is considered summer of junior year or summer of senior year?

Thanks!

are you sure? So, summer counts for the school year preceding it and not for the year after it?

And hence on commonapp, I cannot put summer of 12th for one of the activities I am doing right now. And there would be not a single student who can put summer of 12th on their application?

Don’t the apps generally ask for “the last two summers” as opposed to summer of a particular year?

Also, you could always say “summer between 11th and 12th” if you need to mention a particular summer.

I’m pretty sure summer counts for the school year preceding it, but I could be wrong - you should probably wait for someone else to come along and specify, just in case. :)

But mostly when I hear/read of people talking about summer, they either talk about the summer before or after a school year. I can’t say I’ve heard them saying summer * of * a particular year much.

On the commonapp, there is nothing to say “summer between 11th and 12th” when you list down your 7 activities.
It just has 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th for the year and then you can designate whether the activity was done in summer or school year.

I also want to know what it means to be a ‘rising sophomore’ or ‘rising junior’. In the example ‘rising sophomore’, does that mean you were just a soph or that you will be a soph?

^It means that you’ll be a sophmore, junior the next year. Like I’m a rising senior, so I’ll be a senior this fall.

Your question was answered, no need to bump. I graduated high school in 2009 (I was a senior in the 2008-2009 school year), and therefore this is the summer of my senior year.
