i just want to get a feeling of what type of students are going to attend to see if the reputation of the ucsb student is true(stupid and party animal)

GPA:3.6
SAT:2030
SATII: 780,690
5 AP,10 honors, 5 cc classes

FK tritons for rejecting me, im going to be an aggy, whatever the FK that is

rofl..... you seem very bitter and enraged. sorry for your rejection dude. but i just want to say, you and i have exact same stats. i had a 3.6 uc gpa as well along with a 2030 (740/700 sat 2's tho). and i also had 5 aps and 5 cc classes. what college at sd did you apply for?

i applied to revelle as first choice i think.

just realized i'm going to be a gaucho...man i dont even know what SB's mascot is :

and yeah im pretty bitter, i would have gotten into UCSB with my old 1910, but over the summer i took this really intensive SAT course which totalled 140 hours over 14 weeks to raise my score to 2030. and i studied on my own a lot to get my 670 in math IIC to 780.

i want my $2250 and 140 hours back...playing wow would have been more productive than taking those SAT classes

College wouldn't have mattered, since if one rejects you another one on your ranking would accept you. Those depend on AFTER you get accepted to the general school. Also, a gaucho is an Argentinian cowboy :)

Accepted into microbiology at SB and SD - Any thoughts about which school is better overall for research opportunities? Would a higher GPA at SB mean more on a grad school app than a lower one at SD?

SD is very renowned for biology. It is also a more premiere research institution than UCSB. It depends how large the difference between a GPA at SB and SD would be. If you get a 3.5 at SD, but would get a 3.9 at SB, uhm it would probably be safe to say SB is a better option. If it's within ~.2, then prestige>>higher GPA

First off, to get into a good grad school you'd better have a good GPA (and GRE scores). Everyone who gets into the top programs has a good GPA & GRE. If you think it would be easier at UCSB, that's your business.

What matters most is what you do in school. You need to get involved in research, and not just washing test tubes. This takes initiative in persuading someone to let you work in their lab, and then dedication to do well once inside. In addition you need good recs. The lab work should get you one strong letter, by attending office hours and getting to know your profs you should be able to get the rest you need.

^ worry not, vzu15! I have a friend who got in with scores much lower than the afore mentioned. Something like a 3.7 gpa, 1560 SAT1, 400-500's on the SAT2's and okay EC's. You've hope. UC's are known to be quite random with their selections, as a number of people have already noticed, particularly this year. My piece of advice is to apply to every school you wish to attend, and let the COLLEGES decide whether or not you will be admitted. Never underestimate yourself. :)

i've been admitted to ucsb and columbia gs. considering that ucsb would cost between 7-10k/yr total after grants versus 30-40k/yr for columbia. it's looking pretty likely that i'll be at ucsb in the fall...
