The deadline is today, and after two long weeks of trying to make my CC get it together, I finally was nominated. Who else got it?

I did too!!

My daughter received the Rensselaer Medal. Her guidance counselor gave her the certificate yesterday when we stopped by to pick up some transcripts.

I got the medal, visited on Monday, and hope to attend!

What the...

I just got an email saying I'm a winner, but I never even heard of this at all before reading the email. My school didn't say anything about it, I never filled out any apps about it, etc...

What...?

I just got an email like that too...not sure what's up with it either though...I knew about it but my school doesn't participate...kinda confusing

yeah, i think everyone who is on their mailing list got sent 2 emails today. both were pretty much the same, except one of them had a sentence on the top about winning the medal - that one was sent out by accident, as i just got another email saying that they were sorry and wanted to retract the thing about the medal because that one was only meant for the medalists. most likely a computer glitch sending out emails to the wrong people.

hahahahaha so much for being the most "connected" campus

i actually thought i won. could you imagine the disaster that caused.

Words cannot describe how upset I am right now.

Anyone else get this one?

Rensselaer's Dean of Admissions admitted in an e-mail that somebody screwed up big time. As consolation, they're offering a $60k (that's right, 6.0 x 10^4 US Dollar) scholarship... the 'Leadership Scholarship' to anyone who got the faulty e-mail. The catch: you have to apply Early Decision (I'm assuming both ED I and ED II are valid).

Suddenly I'm not so sad. ^______^

i just got that message too. more like i just got $60,000!

anyone know the deal with this?

This seems pretty fishy if you ask me.
I wonder how much of a mistake the email was...

I've been getting some emails lately, but I know I won the medal, so its not a mistake. I'm going this weekend for the medal open house.

Apparently they made a mistake with a few emails (its not clear how many, but it can't be that many), and they are offering the 60k scholarship to them. This is really not that big of a deal for the administration, because they normally give out a lot of those to non medalists anyways.

There is nothing fishy. It was just an IT snafu. Twenty percent of the students enrolled at RPI have Rensselaer Medal scholarships.

RPI received over 10,000 applications last year for the 1,300 available slots. RPI does not have a recruiting problem -- just the opposite since they are a New Ivy League school.

One caveat is that if you apply Early Decision and you are accepted it is binding, meaning that you are obligated to attend RPI. Make sure that RPI is your first choice if you apply ED.

The letter is real, after a friend of mine received the second letter he let me know about it. He double checked with the admissions since gmail said it was not sent from RPI.edu, yet admissions confirmed that it was actually official.

Out of curiousity, how many of those that received the mistaken letter went to RPI's Admissions Event "Summer Visiting Days" over the summer?

My friend used an e-mail that was different from the e-mail Rensselaer usually sends him mail to. Yet they sent him the e-mail on this different e-mail address.

Mostly curious if this small population may of been those who attended this event.

Well, just got back from the Medalist open house. Pretty good event, was able to ask a question to the assoc. dean of engineering, and a lengthier chat with the EE department head. Good visit, definitely a top choice for me!

Dal - I got the mistake email and have never even been to RPI's campus, though I've been on their mailing list for a while.

I beleive it is spam. I got the letter and they siad my HS credntials made them choose me. How did they know my credentials when I have not applied to the school. PS I am anInt student so my scholl definitely did not furnish them with it.

It's not spam..i asked the admission officer and they said it was true that they gave all the people who got the false mail a 15k per year scholarship...there's already a thread about it...
