Now that the May 1 deadline has passed I would like to know if you or someone you know turned down Cal Poly and why ?

I know one history major that turned it down to go to a UC because he got almost full financial aid there in grants while CP only gave him 11,000. Also 4 engineer majors, 3 accepted Berkeley and 1 Boulder, 1 business major who accepted Bearkeley.

Three of my son’s friends turned down Cal Poly SLO. Two are engineering majors, one animal science. The two engineering majors will attend UCSD, the animal science major will attend UCD (where she received a regents scholarship, making cost of attendance the same as Cal Poly, plus has priority registration and guaranteed housing).

^ Oh, left of why…the two that will be attending UCSD always considered UCSD their #1 choice. They never gave strong consideration to Cal Poly, never visited, didn’t really look into it, other than knowing it was one of the best CSU’s.

Going to either UCSD or UCLA. Prefer to live in/near a big city (currently living in small town & previously lived in Los Angeles). Also, financial aid covers more at these schools.

Applied Math (physics) at Cal Poly
Mathematics of Computation at UC’s

Going to UW Seattle for a number of reasons - much cheaper tuition (IS), campus is surrounded by an urban area, and because imo UWS has a better overall rep nationwide/internationally versus CPSLO.

@ SoDoMojo I’m originally from Seattle, went to HS in Shoreline Dist. Let me just say that unless you have web feet living in the PNW takes some getting used to. I’m from there, I like it up there, but you may have heard about the rain, UW or no UW. My kid is a freshman at SLO and has friends in the dorm from Seattle. They don’t go home for Christmas, why do you think that is? When I was a kid the families with a little money came down here for Christmas & New Year. I think the school sells it’s self and the students LOVE the place.

Yeah weather was definitely the main negative of going to UW over a Cali school, but oh well - I’ve been here for 17 years already, might as well stick it out for another 4… didn’t feel it was worth it to pay an extra $5K per year just for the weather anyways.

Turned down CP cause of 5+ years to degree and we personally know several kids complaining about being bored cause they could only take 3 classes in a quarter cause they couldn’t get any other ones they needed. Felt UCLA and other schools better prepared for masters degrees and their engineering was more highly regarded by industry people we know. Theoretical approach when combined with their hands on/lab stuff is good.

blueskies2day -just to let you know i started this thread also.I started both threads to gain some more knowlege about Cal Poly not just for something to do.Most enginiering and other intence degrees take 5+ years to finish for most people no matter where they go.My one son is a finace major.Hard as hell.He has gone 5 years and still need another class.I think Cal Poly is better for people who want to work when they are done with thier bachelors rather than go to more school. So I am sure you made the right choice.Cal Poly is not for you.

I think for CC to be useful it can’t just be cheerleading propaganda but has to look at things objectively and factually so people don’t make the wrong choice and regret it. There are many many schools you can finish engineering in 4 years, and even get a masters in 5, but not usually the public ones in CA.

I would be interested in knowing where that would be in the west with a quality computer program.Thank you.

Son chose UCSB over Cal Poly because of UCSB’S ability/policy to change major if needed, location, overall campus vibe, helpful/friendly staff, recruiter list, food quality, AP unit equivalence policy, and the fact that UCSB is a UC. I am impressed with UCSB’s acceptance procedure where everyone is notified at once, which in my opinion, shows that UCSB aims to treat everyone (and every major) in a fair and equal manner.
