So, who's applying where?

Man, 11 places. That's a lot of applications to fill out.

Edit: I don't know why my post is before yours, Fetton - I definitely posted mine afterwards..

HT, I have time-manipulation abilities ;)

But ya, is 11 a bit excessive? Probably... it sure was expensive and time-consuming. I spent multiple Saturdays spent doing absolutely nothing but applications. However, I'm extremely paranoid about not getting in anywhere so the carpet bombing had to be done!

Fetton, I know exactly what you mean. But really, deep inside, I think everyone knows that they will get in somewhere. With your GPA and research, I'll be very surprised if you don't get into your top 5 or 6 choices, assuming your recommendations are strong.

11's not bad. I'm applying to 8. Only thing I'm worried about is annoying my LOR writers lol.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of math are you into, HT? I can't tell by looking at your list.

MS Mechanical Engineering
Schools: UTexas, Texas A&M, Berkeley, Minnesota, Colorado Boulder, and Stanford (Civil)

Stats withheld :)

Fetton, I guess that is more or less my point. I have gotten good marks in everything and I'm interested in everything. So I'm applying to larger departments so that I can have some breadth of choice. At the moment it's either number theory or algebraic geometry, but i'm open to (all) alternatives :) PDEs or topology sounds fun too.

That's cool, HT. Good luck with it all.

You'd get writers cramp from writing out my list:

Washu
University of Washington
University of Wisconsin
UNC
OSU
Indiana State
University of Arizona
University of Iowa
University of Maryland
University of Michigan
VCU
Penn State
and another one I can't remember right now...

Two body problem sucks :(

Hmm top 650... I figured that I might as well chuck out a random number as undergrad ranking is so pointless anyway.
Most of you are applying to alot of places, more than 5 or 6. I'm already having trouble filling out three applications...

Good luck to everybody :)

Phd in Comp Bio / Theoretical Bio
GPA (ivy): 3.1 , in-major: 3.02 bio/math
GRE: 530v, 750q, 3.5w (cold baby)
2 yrs research math bio

harvard, yale, columbia, nyu, brown, mit, stanford, uwash, ucdavis, utaustin, uchicago, cornell

daredevil? yep :)

What is math bio? It's not too late to put in some safety applications.

I'm assuming that means mathematical biology. To my knowledge, this is essentially statistics applied to biological systems? I could be wrong.

Yes I second what belevitt said, it really is not too late to send in safety applications. I mean one or two is not too big of a chore.

Applying to PhD in Biomedical/Bioengineering, specialization in microfluidics/mirco-nano biotechnology.
Top 10 engineering schools
GPA: 3.57
3 conf. publications, acknowledgement in nature nanotech, 3 recommendations (1 from nanotech director in UIUC, 1 from prov who invented microPIV, 1 from a class prof)

Applying to:
Purdue, UIUC, Gatech, Cornell, Columbia, Stanford, MIT

Do you guys think I should apply more? I choose the programs based on research in mircrofluidics. I would be happy if I can get in to Cornell. Good luck guys.

PhD in comp. bio/bioinfo./systems bio.
Two honour degrees (biochemistry and computer science)
GPA: 3.82 (biochem), 3.98 (comp. sci)
Top 5 Canadian university
GRE: 1320+4.5 (no subj. GRE)

one 1st author conf. paper (best paper), three co-authored papers (conf+journal), two posters at conf.
Two LORs from supervisors, 3rd one is tenured professor who taught me in two chem courses

Apply to: utoronto, stanford, mit, berkeley, princeton, yale, harvard, uw, ucsf, ucsd, jhu
(counting on utoronto if cannot get in a US school, and will feel no regret because there are still postdoc opportunities in US)

Wish everyone good luck!

Bernard, what program did you apply to at Hopkins? I didn't know they had a computational or systems biology program.

sarbruis, I applied to the biomedical engineering program, there's an option called computational biology within the program. you can check it out here: The Whitaker Biomedical Engineering Institute at Johns Hopkins

Thanks. I missed that page somehow--and also the Computational Medicine page.

So i'm from India.. and my interests are in black (South asian) british writing.. gpa is irrelevant, because i'm from india.. and recos state that i'm good at what i do, and i have potential for research. Gre - V650. Writing sample, i dont know if its great, but my advisor says it screams out originality. If htat matters.

Applying to columbia, Uchicago, northwestern etc.. Do you think i have a shot with columbia?

notmythang, GPA will still be relevant. You will likely need your transcripts evaluated. your verbal is good (around the 90th percentile); whats your quant?
