So, who's applying where?

quant is 770, writing 4.5

hmm.. my transcripts cant keep me out. This is an english phd.. What do you think?

your writing (AWA) score seems a bit weak for someone pursuing an area of English, but most programs still don't really know how to interpret that scale.
how do you argue your transcripts can't keep you out? do you mean you have very strong grades and classes?
do you have relevant research in this area? are there professors at each of your proposed programs studying your specific research interest?

Program: (Terminal) Master's in Political Science
Niche interests: Media and politics, political sociology, rhetoric
Undergrad Major: Journalism (My school's journalism program is considered the best in nation by many. For my area of specialization, which is print/online newspaper journalism, I've never seen my school fall off a top five shortlist of programs.)
GPA: 3.94 at a school ranked 96/tier 1 by U.S. News; not sure what that technically equates to
Major GPA: 4.0
GRE: 590V, 650Q, 5.5W (Didn't finish the last sentence on my second essay. Oops.)
Resume-boosters: Assistant editor at our journalism program's city-distributed paper (highest position an undergraduate student can obtain there); Multicultural Certificate for intensive diversity/multiculturalism-related coursework; lots of campus newspaper experience; interned with NY Post (I didn't pick the internship, lol) at the Democratic National Convention

I'm applying to Georgetown, Columbia, Penn, George Washington and University of Virginia as my "reach" programs; William and Mary for the hell of it (American Studies program); and Florida and Texas as safeties, although with my GRE score, I might not even get in there.

Go figure. Got a 1460 on the old SAT and a 2250(?) or so on the new one, but my GRE's an abysmal 1240. I'm a freaking National Merit Scholar. Anyway, ouch.

I'm taking the GRE again Dec. 20, but I honestly have no idea if my score will improve. Do I stand a snowball's chance in hell of getting in at any of my schools?

Materials Science/Engineering (ph.d)

non-US Citizen (NO NSF fellowship or alike, a huge disadvantage i guess)
GPA: 3.75;
GRE: V 750, Q 800, W 5.5;

Two summers of research intern and one UROP
(including a project at an top-tier research institute)
no paper published though (kinda disappointing)
Should have very positive letters from at least two professors i worked with

Applying to:
Stanford, Berkeley, UT Texas, Harvard, Caltech, MIT, Northwestern, Cornell, U Michigan - Ann Arbor
(a bit too many. But i guess my chance of being admitted to some of these is pretty slim)

WOw, Ni-SDC, your GRE scores are awesome... I wish I had those scores.

huh. It's kind of hard to publish a paper after one summer of UROP... i am not sure if it is that disappointing.

hi, HT2010. Thanks for the compliment.
I dont think GRE scores are that important for application, though.

I feared i could not cope and overdid the preparation as I am not a native speaker.
If i had not known that, i would rather have paid more attention to other things like
my research project and coursework.

Edit #2 - sorry, just got official GRE scores.

CupofCurry where are you from. I just took GRE yesterday and my verbal score is horrible. I will graduate in March 2009.

woo a potential matsci grad! Impressive GRE scores Ni-SDC. If I may ask, what type of research are you interested in doing?

Have you considered applying to UCSB? (I thought their deadline was sometime in January) I know it's not a renowned school overall, but it has an amazing MSE program (with the added bonus of a beach, party hardy undergrads, and I think no quals?)

I also don't see UIUC as one of your choices. I know you are already applying to a substantial number of schools, but I was wondering why you chose not to apply to UIUC since I think it is a top 5 (or maybe top 3) program. I'm guessing it maybe related to the "fit" of the program with your research interests. And I'm also aware that rankings don't mean anything =-P.

Anyways, Good luck!

Here's me...looking for an MS in Computer Engineering

BS in Computer Engineering
Boston University (GPA: 3.92/4.00)
GRE: 800Q (94%) / 540V (71%) /4.0W (37%)
Tau Beta Pi
Eta Kappa Nu (Treasurer)

Applying to...

Stanford
MIT
Harvard
CMU
USC (Accepted)

Update:

Admitted into UT Bioengineering PhD!

acceptances already? congratulations!

hi, Jalopy!

thanks for the reply. Your guess is correct. I applied to neither UCSB nor UIUC primarily because of mismatch of interest. I am interested in energy materials, particularly those used in fuel cells because of my previous research experience. Recently, i have become interested in nanomaterials as well, so i add some schools to my list based on that.

UCSB indeed has one of the best Materials Science/Engineering program in the country. They have two current faculty members who are Nobel Laureates and produce ph.D graduates who assume faculty positions in various prestigious institutions.

UIUC is also a great school. But i eliminated it earlier in my application as i didnt find any specific professor i feel very much to work with, at least not in the Materials dept. Similarly can be said of Georgia Tech, another brand name in my field.

Time is also my concern. I am afraid i would not have enough time to prepare all the necessary materials and read the potential professors' publications if I apply to more than ten. I think i have applied for enough great schools. Getting into any of them (probably except for the safety net school) will be a huge bliss to me.

I am an engineering major. My University is ranked around 60s in the nation. Intl student.
GPA: 3.72
Research/TA: I did TA for 2 and half years 1 year at math dept, 1 and half at engg dept. I do not have research experience. I will take 3 graduate level classes during my undergrad senior year. I have grades above A- in all the engineering classes except two. I will work with a professor next semester for his analysis program. Already passed FE.
Graduating: May 2009
GRE: Verbal will kill me. Math will not be a problem.
Schools: VTech, Texas A&M, U of Mich, Vanderbilt, Utah, UConn
Any suggestions? What will be my chances of getting into these schools?

Top 20 engineering school
GPA 3.46
GRE 1330 (both 600s) =/
1 first author publication
2 strong research recs, 1 prof rec with whom I TAed
some science honors/scholarships
female applying to PhD in EE at Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, UT Austin, Columbia, Northwestern, University of Michigan, Princeton.

weakest link: Q GRE =/

Applying for PhD in Musicology

UGPA: 3.5
GGPA: 4.0

720 Q
670 V
4.0 AW (truly frustrating: took the test twice, asked for a rescore after the first test; really confounding considering that I scored a 6.0 five years ago for my Master's, and have been published multiple times in peer-reviewed journals! Oh well, the publications probably cancel out the low AW score)

Applying to UC Berkeley; Harvard; Princeton; U of Chicago; Brandeis; Ohio State; U of Pittsburgh; UNC-Chapel Hill; U of Illinois (as you can see, I'm basically playing the numbers game).

I believe I have three very strong rec's, and with my publications as well as a presentation at a major professional conference under my belt, I think I've got a pretty decent shot at getting in somewhere. Of course, with the financial crunch that so many institutions are under, who knows...

I will post my stats and admissions after I get some acceptance/rejection letters. I am paranoid about posting that info before ad coms make their decisions.

I applied to a lot of schools and I'm hoping to get into one that fits me the best.
