So who's deciding to go to BC? And why?

Hey, I was just curious on who has decided to attend Boston College. Personally, I’m waitin’ until I visit a few schools before I commit. Also, what are your reasons for picking BC? For the kids who are still waiting on decisions, why did you apply to BC?

I look forward to your responses guys! I hope to stimulate some type of conversation other than usually, “what are my chances.” (not that there’s anything wrong w/ those threads ‘cus i know how important they are for the people who start them) Who knows, maybe we’ll get a little chit-chat goin’!

Why did I apply to BC...hmmm...
I guess it seems like the perfect balance in terms of size, location, difficulty of academics, partying, etc.
-It's a nice size university - much smaller than my fallback state school, but larger than the 2000-some student LACs.
-It is close enough to an awesome city that you can take the T in any time you want, but it is not in the hussle and bussle of downtown. It's in a nice, quiet neighborhood (though when you add the school to the neighborhood, things aren't so quiet anymore, i would suppose).
-It has respected academics, some great professors (from what I've heard), and a good honors program. On the other hand, you don't have to spend 23 hours a day in the library (although I've heard some, who choose to, do), there is plenty of time to get studying done and still be able to party and be involved, etc.
-I am personally attracted to the fact that there are no Frats/Sororities, so the social life is centered around the dorms and the city.
-Also, I know BC has infinite opportunities for unique community service and leadership. Being in Boston means that there are many, many more options when it comes to volunteering - not just tutoring or beach cleanups - than more isolated campuses.

Some downsides...
-Lots of red tape. I know a number of cases of obnoxious, drawn out problems with BCs reslife dept., but it seems that they are able to work something out and in the end students are happy, as far as i'm aware.
-At least according to some, BC is on the "Alternative Lifestyles not an Alternative" top 10 list, and I know they've had a lot of controversy with "Coming Out Week" and such in the past. Then again, I think that can, if kept in check, foster healthy debate and growth. I don't think minorities/non-catholics/homosexuals/etc feel discriminated against any more at BC than other schools, but then I'm not there to see it for myself yet, am I?

Hmm...that's all I've got for now...I got in but I won't decide till April whether I'll be attending. Speaking of which, I have 3 apps to finish and mail today, perhaps I should get going on that...

Hey 70reve4rotag, thanks for replying! I chose to apply to BC for a lot of the same reasons you did, which is cool. I'm glad to hear that BC has so many community service opportunities, and I hope that this is the same for internships. Your downsides are something to think about, and I also agree that discrimination at BC isn't any greater than at other schools, or at least, I hope not... Good luck with the rest of your applications and I hope you enjoy the rest of your break! Happy New Year! Wow, can you believe its gonna be 2005?!? It's the year we've all been waiting for, but now I can't believe that its actually here. (well, in 2-1/2 hours!)

bump! lets get this thread drummin guys! if you don't want to post about why you chose BC, then tell us about yourself so we can get to know our fellow (potential) eagles!

you hit it right on the money 70reve4rotag! how in the world are there over 100 views and only 4 posts (not including this one)... jeeze, and they are all from the same 2 people, lol! we need more action in the BC forum, so if you're reading this type down a quick reply (why you chose to apply/attend BC OR a little something about yourself) and click that button!

since i already answered the first question, i'll share some stuff about myself. hmm, like the info on the sidebar says, i'm 17 (18 on Feb. 17!), i live in Washington, i'm obviously a senior, and i CANNOT wait until i graduate!!! does anybody agree when i say senioritis is a b****?!? anyways, i hope you guys respond 'cus like i said before, we need more lovin' in the BC forum!

I'm going to BC because it's just a perfect fit for me: the size, the type of students that go there, etc. Having an idyllic suburban campus with easy access to the best college city on the planet is a huge bonus. It has big time athletics, and I can't wait to go crazy at football, hockey, bball games, etc. Its academic reputation is seemingly increasing exponentially, and my degree will only keep increasing in value. I plan to stay in the Boston area, and a BC degree around here is on par with Harvard or Yale. The college also seems to be growing, with more land and construction, rather than being stagnant.
I am from Milton, MA, about 20 mins from BC, and have grown up loving the school. I attended a Catholic high school, even though I'm Protestant, and loved the environment (especially community service, which I know BC has tons of opportunities for). I plan to be an English major in college, with some kind of american or Irish studies minor. I am a rabid Boston sports fan, and being able to hop on the T for a Sox game (or riot in Kenmore square when they win the WS again) is a huge bonus for me. I love Boston in general.
Let's hear from some other people.

I'm also 17 (will be 18 in March), and I'm from the West coat of Florida. I definitely agree when it comes to being a senior! It's 2005! We graduate this year guys!! WOOOO!
Hmmm...a little bit more about me...I've been at the same school since 2nd grade, I played competative tennis from when I was 5 till 10th grade (though I was never super good...I started getting sick of it and took a break for 2 years in middle school, then quit because of lack of time in high school), and I do a lot of community work. I have a sister who is a junior at BC, but we're not very close. If I choose BC, I'm hoping to get really involved in its community service opportunities and student gov't, and then study abroad junior year. Sometime between now and grad school, I want to do service work abroad - in Africa or Asia - but as far as career aspirations, I'm not too sure yet.
It's nice to hear from you all and good luck with apps for any of you who (like me) are still wrapping up that process!! Happy New Year!

Cool dudes! Yeah, I also want to study abroad and the destination of my choice would be the Philippines. I was born there but my first time back was last summer and the whole experience for me was seriously shocking. I guess I was a little naive going into the situation, but I'm really glad that the experience left a huge impression on me. Some day I want to go back and some how give back to the country (I really want to open up medical clinics, but that sounds so far fetched even to me!), but for now, I'll settle for just a year over there studying abroad. Yeah, the fact that BC has a program w/ a Jesuit school in the Philippines is another reason why I chose to apply to the school.

Keep 'em coming guys!

I was just thinking about this, but do any of you guys know if you can study abroad twice? Like, say one program is only a semester or summer long, could you do another program if it was only a semester long too? Thanks.

ya I'm pretty sure you can

I think I'll study abroad in Ireland. My dad grew up there but I've never been there. BC has like 10 different programs over there, but they're all very competitive to get into.

ok, I loved BC from the second me and my girlfriend visited in august. The people were incredibly nice and the campus was perfect. Like someone else said, i really didnt want a massive school but i didnt want a tiny one either, and again its location near a big city but not in it is perfect. Aside from that i cant really explain why...obviously it does offer a great education as well!

About me: Im 18 and i live in Rhode Island....i go to a dificult private Quaker school, which ill be happy to get away from...i work alot of jobs, to help pay for the school...i have a 91 Camaro that i painted and restored myself,..........yeah lol

Talk all you people!

I absolutely fell in love with BC the moment i stepped on the campus. It just felt right, the whole setting and everything. The location is owesome since its not in the city so its a good sense of community but at the same time you can always take a hike to Boston if you want so its great, plus its such a great college town. I was soooo glad that i got deferred by Penn cause i really wanted to go to BC just because of the whole atmosphere including students and academics. What's great about BC is the fact that its so similar to my town so i feel at home, and yet different in a good way that theres more diversity and its a lot bigger which is a good thing. Also the academic workload is challenging yet not too overwhelming and the students are so nice and not sickly competitive.
and about me... im 18 and im from Westchester County in NY and go to one of the best public schools in New York State... and can't wait for Sept!!! so excited :-)

lols, thats awesome BGgirl1604. you're lucky that you've already made your decision and everything and that you aren't stressin' out about which school you should go to. good luck w/ the rest of your senior year and i dunno, maybe i'll see you in september!

i'm still unsure too... waiting to hear back from many more schools.

I got in early but I'm still waitin on some other schools. However, I really do like BC and it's possible I end up going there. I'm from Scituate, MA and if the train ever comes in like it's supposed to then I'll be able to take the T from BC to down the street from my house and back, which is quite convenient. I like the school's location right near the city but not directly in it.

I also wanna stay around here and probably work in Boston so I'm glad to here you say that kq09 about BC holding so much weight in the city. I've heard that from quite a few people - that Boston is like one big club of BC grads, so if I end up goin there then I hope that's true.
