So who's definitely attending in the fall?

SAMMIE, that's almost where I'm at with Northwestern (it's my favorite), but I have a slight problem. I also sincerely like Michigan so I'm going to attempt to give them a chance.

so once you all get letters saying you got in, is the housing first come first serve? for the scholars housing and stuff? bc i havent heard yet and im nervous im not gonna get my housing preference

I was accepted (out of state)..not sure I'm going...I'm waiting to hear from other places. Plus, got a great scholarship offer from a couple of good places. Is there any chance for scholarship money for an out of stater at Michigan?

Alexandre- they're Yale and Stanford. I plan on majoring in econ right now, but it's not definite...

Collegehopeful, Stanford is awesome. Good luck with them. You certainly have the stats to make it happen.

PSATmadness, Michigan does give scholarship money, if the student is good enough.

good chance im there. actually 99% chance. GO BLUE BABY! Any of you hot chics out there who are goin to mich as a fresh, IM me at REALBEAST87 on AOL instant messenger, haha. just thought id try.

Well I was deferred EA at Stanford so I'm unsure how I will fare in the regular round... and Yale is a total crapshoot and looking less and less likely each day...

so some of you are my future classmates, interesting

For a State School, Mich. is quite pricey for out-of-staters, no? UTexas is $13000, UNC is $27,000,UVA is $32000, UMich is $37000, up there with Berkeley?

you get what you pay for....

"UMich is $37000, up there with Berkeley?"

Quite a bit more, actually.

Not really Samwise. Michigan is more in terms of tuition, but once you take cost of living into consideration, Cal catches up real fast.

Chocoholic, you are talking about average state schools that spend $20,000/student or $30,000/student. But Michigan is not typical of state schools. Michigan spends roughly $60,000/student (most elite private schools spend between $60,000/student and $90,000/student). When you look at it that way, Michigan is actually fairly priced. Unless one comes from a poor or lower middle income family, private universities of Michigan's quality do not usually give much in way of aid. By and large, Michigan does a good job of charging fairly. However, it would be nice if Michigan could give out some more in terms of merit aid.

I was just remarking on how some State schools like Berkeley and Michigan charge close to private schools, for out-of-staters.
And yes, merit aid would be great to attract top students from other states.

Alexandre
What would you say UVA and UNC (Chapel Hill) spend per student? And where are you getting this info from. I would love to find out more, that is one more way to compare schools.

Chocoholic, it is not amazing that Michigan and Cal and UVA charge as much as private schools...they are better than most private schools anyway...and to the 65% plus who are in-state, they are practically free!

As for how I calculate the spending per student. It is simple. I look at the opreating budget, not inlcuding the medical school ($2.3 Billion in the case of Michigan), and divide it by the total number of graduate and undergraduate students (38,000 in the case of Michigan). It comes up to roughly $60,000/student. Take Brown. Its operating budget is roughly $550 million and they have 7,500 students. So it comes up to roughly $70,000/student.

UVA's operating budget is roughly $1 Billion and UVA has roughly 20,000 students. So UVA spends roughly $50,000/student.

I am not sure about UNC.

Alexandre-i went to campus days at um this weekend and the tour guide took us into chem 1800..the room you made famous from your fall!! I really liked the campus and found it easy to get around.

hahaha.... Oh boy. The stuff we learn on CC about other people (especially Alexandre) and their connection to different places (I think you officially put down your mark on owning the room chem 1800). BTW, I finally set up a date to go to Campus Day during the first week of April (Eagle, was it a good presentation?) so I'm kind of excited to get another look at this famous (as Eagle says it) room.

Michigan sent me a water bottle today, haha. I really like it - it's like the Nalgene ones. Anyways, I'm accepted but not sure if I'll be going there next year; I'm waiting for April 1st to see if I got into Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, or Cornell. Otherwise it's UMich or U of Illinois.

I am glad to hear you enjoyed your visit Eagle...and that you got a laugh at my expense! hehe I love Ann Arbor and the campus, so it comes as no surprised to me that you enjoyed your trip. Hopefully, we will count you as one of our own someday soon!

Reeses, I am glad to hear you have scheduled your Campus Day. You have alreadey been to Ann Arbor and on Campus, but now, you will be seeing it through the eyes of an admitted student. It will look different...and feel more real and personal.

Smeds, you are looking at a bunch of great schools. What did you want to major in again?
