I got tired of waiting so I called the admins and they said they will have the decision before May 1st...
I was deferred mid january and I sent in my first semester grades first week of february.
I went to see my counselor and he said that I have a "good chance" and that I shouldn't worry so much..
I'm kind of frustrated...
I see that umich is a reach for me, but I really want to I didn't hear of anyone getting rejected.
Did anyone actually get rejected?
Do they just wait till the last moment to reject?
I just want to know if I should be worried...

People have already been rejected, yes.

This is just making me mad, I mean, why does it take so long for them to review deferred applicants? It's not like they have much new info to go over, it's not like they have 20,000+ applicants. I just want to know if i'm in or not. That way I can schedule visits to other schools if i'm rejected.

Is UMich's delayed applicants admission difficulty about the same as Madison's?

how is madison's delayed applicants admission difficulty?

I think that as long as you submit your supplemental application, completed, and you submit your grades, you're showing enough interest for them to admit you. They say that they admit around 50% of their postponed applicants on a normal year. I've heard the same number for Michigan, and i've heard that if you get in one school, you're likely to get into the other. But Michigan's 'selectivity rank' in US News is 18th, and Wisconsin's is 45th.

what about for people that applied near the deadline? I havent heard anything at all, although they have been evaluating my app for awhile.

well, me and one of my friend with similar stats applied hav our apps completed around feb10-13th, and accepted on 28th.. international (stats on other threads), not particularly amazing, stilll kinda startled tht we got to know so early (others from our school tht completed around same date still waiting), so i guess it can jsut be very random at times???

It's not that it takes so long to evaluate an individual app. If your app is complete, and they haven't asked you to submit additional information like grades, then you've probably been evaluated. What is taking so long on the actual decision is that they need to know more the pool. It's not enough to know about your app--they need to know about the other apps, too. Apps get completed at different rates and the readers can only get through so many a day.

Admissions needs to know where to draw the line between "admit" and "Not admit." That line isn't the same every year. They can generally do a good guess, and inform many people as soon as they are evaluated which side of the line they fall on. But in year like this one, when apps are up and the class can't go over target? It's harder to figure out where the line is until they have nearly all of the apps evaluated. Furthermore, a mistake in guessing that line could be more costly than usual.

In essence, it's a two-step process. The first step is evaluating your app and assigning it a value (ranging from High Admit to Deny). The second step is deciding where to draw the line among the students they've rated in the "High Admit" and "Admit" categories.

True or not, here's the talk around son's school...deferred kids are kept on the back burner on a low simmer while UM waits to see which high stat/UM safety candidates they can snag after receiving their Ivy rejections. Then, they have a better idea of how many spaces they have left to fill. Hence, the long wait well into April before getting a final decision on a deferral.

I haven't heard anything from Michigan at all, but I called them today, and they told me to expect to wait another four weeks. (app complete 01-06, SAT: 2260, no clue what my Michigan GPA is, great ec)

another FOUR weeks??...

WOW, i just want to know!!

When DS called he was also told he would hear in April.

I emailed them just now and they told me I should expect a decision by the end of this month.

Are the last few posts talking about hearing from admissions for the first time? I believe the OP was talking about when decisions would be made for deferrals.

Yes, I received a letter, requesting my semester grades (which, according to UMich is not a deferral)

re: my post referring to DS - he was deferred in January - stil waiting to hear and was told early APril

jeeeeez im still waiting from 11/22
app comp 12/23
ridiculous

im waiting from deferral on 12/2/05 ... theres no way youd get a decision May 1.. thats the day you have to confirm enrollment for every school. i think its mid-april at the latest we'll find out.

We just got back from a Campus Day visit - and were told that this is the most competitive class ever in U-M history. That's partly because they are accepting fewer students this year - but also I think the number of applications is up.

I think what a lot of people don't realize is that even though apps are way up, the reason is that people are applying to a lot more schools. Personally, I applied to 12 schools and a lot of my friends applied to more than that. The thing is everyone can only go to one school, so if you are waitlisted or just waiting a long time, you may get into a school after people start turning down some of the schools they are accepted by.
