So worried..

I recently got admission OOS to Purdue's CME program, and I got admission in state to St. Louis College of Pharmacy (6 year program instead of 8). I have no idea what to do!

For my family, the costs will be the same for both colleges, at around $120k. Purdue is 300 miles away, Pharmacy is 25 miles away. The pharmacy college is private, ranked 32 in the nation, and isn't as prestigious at Purdue. Basically, I want to know by a general consensus, what would you do in my situation? Chemical engineering at Purdue for 4 years, or Pharmacy close to home for 6 years? I'm torn with confusion.. help me please!
I have to send in a $300 deposit in 1 week to pharmacy college otherwise I get rejected.. help, thanks in advance

You seem a little stressed out over this; you've posted the same thing on multiple forums. I think the reason you're not getting many responses is that no one can provide the answer for you. We don't know you -- what you like to do, what your aspirations are, what will make you happy. I'm not sure you know the answers to these questions either, or you would not have applied to two very different programs. If you don't know what your future goals are, then don't box yourself in too early. Follow the course that will provide you with the most options once you discover what it is you enjoy doing.

Yes I made two posts yesterday I believe. I enjoy all types of science and math, and have no problem doing either engineering or pharmacy; basically I'm worried about the job outlook on engineering, and the social aspect of a college of St. Louis College of Pharmacy's size. If I went there there would be little to no social life, but Purdue would be much different.

Go to Purdue because there are more options if you decide you don't want to do pharmacy. You never know how you'll feel once you start taking classes and so it's always good to have options if you want to change your major! And hey, you can go to pharmacy school after! Seriously--purdue would have more oportunites in all areas and is much more prestigious. It will help you more later when you want to get a job!

Oh--and you shouldn't have to send in your deposit already...there's a forum on here that discusses that very thing. Schools can't require you to submit before May 1st. It's a national dealine and they cannot require you to commit before that! Some schools have 'early' deadlines but if you ask for an extension until May 1st they have to grant it to you and they can't take away any financial aid/scholarships.

If I were you, I would go to Purdue. Not only is it more prestigous, but it sounds like it will give you both a better overall college experience as well as more academic options if you change your mind about your future plans. If you go to Pharmacy, you will be locked into that track for 6 years, but, if you go to Purdue, you will be able to move more freely between different science and engineering disciplines.

Also, if you are worried about the "job outlook" on engineering, my dad was telling me today (in yet another attempt to convince me to be an engineer) about an article he found on AOL news that listed the top ten college majors with the highest salaries right after graduation: chemical engineering was at the top of the list.

I agree that you should ask for an extension of time to make your decision about the pharmacy program. You clearly are torn and should not make this decision while feeling so torn & especially not asking strangers on the net to help you make these choices. Your family, GC, teachers & folks who know & care about you are really the folks you need to connect with. If you can, shadow some pharmacists & see what they do (not all stay indoors at a pharmacy all day, some do home care in patient's homes, some are in a hospital setting, some do research).
If you can swing it, shadow some engineers also (or at least talk with them).
Double-check with both schools about how flexible things are if you decide you want to switch majors as a freshman or thereafter.
Anyway, those are my random thoughts on the matter. Good luck & congrats! My son hasn't yet heard from ANY of his schools. <grin></grin>

chemical engineering majors are the highest paid major right out of college
