^yeah I agree with milktea and nosferatu on college acceptances/test scores, and I too was thinking about Johns Hopkins BiomedE but realized that neural engineering or autonomous systems/robotics were things that were more Electrical Engineering with a BioE Emphasis rather than just BioE/BiomedE alone as a major. So decided a good MechE or EE bachelors degree from a good engineering school and then grad school in BioE/BiomedE or MechE or EE was a better plan.

And yeah Berkeley’s financial aid was an amazing offer too, only one better I got from BSU (Boise State University), and i don’t think I have to explain why I’d didn’t take it over Berkeley lol.

so what exactly determines financial aid? because i got none from all the school i applied to and that time my family was renting a house (now we own one) and only one parent works
while my friend got a ****load of money from usc and she totally annoys me by saying she is poor when her family just bought (last year) like a 1.2 million house there are probably many more factors but stilllll

^wow really I’m sorry, well I got my the full cost of the college given to me in fanancial aid (52-53K) but only 20K of it was scholarship/grants that I don’t have to pay back and it said that it is given to all with a 4.1 GPA or above plus the status of the financial need determined by their fafsa (My household’s income which was only my dad’s income for the most recent tax return I showed them was 75K (which is abnormally low but it was bad year) and I have two younger brothers as well so I guess you can use all that to determine why I got my aid). The rest of the aide Berkeley gave me were those Department of Education loans (subsidized and unsubsidized). I’m happy I didn’t have to take out any private loans though, that’s kinda nice.

Really sucks that some of you chose because of FA. It’s pretty much like saying the rich can buy their education. Not that Berkeley isn’t a great school (albeit I’m saying this with a laugh).
On topic though, they’ve been saying this type of stuff for every incoming year for the past few years.

accepted: yale, brown, upenn, regents at Berkeley and UCLA

denied: harvard, stanford, princeton (my top three choices O_O), and embarrassingly, duke (was too lazy in doing the optional essay)

My final choices were down to Yale, Berkeley, UCLA. But I chose Berkeley after visiting the campus several times.

It is way cheaper for me to attend Berkeley than Yale (that stupid CSS Profile for private schools ruined my financial aid O_O). also, the chem dept in berkeley is better than Yale and UCLA (at least according to graduate school ranking). didnt want to go to UCLA too coz its too damn close to home. yale on the other hand is too far and didnt give me the right feeling or vibe.

this guy i know, he got accepted at harvard. and because of a significant lost of income in his family, he just decided to go to CSU LongBeach this fall…

@Diivio oh wow, that is actually really nice! i didn’t get any scholarships from any colleges, but whatever, i’m not whining or anything, i’ll just have to hope i get a job in college… i have a 4.6 but my school hella inflates gpa (ie honors courses are counted as a 5,) but i also went to a pretty high ranked public high school…my sat score wasn’t too great though… then again, i don’t think anybody ever asks for high school gpa anymore. but then how would employers differentiate prospective applicants? through experience alone?
yeah, and i do think the rich can buy their education when it comes to private vs. public colleges. Although Berkeley is a great school, I feel that it is easier getting opportunities (ie research) through a private school, but i can’t say from experience, so i will just have to wait and see :)

All of you I’m sure will succeed no matter what college you decided to attend. IMO when it comes down to it, we have more control over our futures than the stat based merit system judges. Einstein’s IQ was high but actually lower than some others who also took it but didn’t accomplish as much him. The change you will have on the world is a product function of intelligence, motivation, and perserverance, so if you are motivated or work hard towards your goals it won’t matter how smart you are.

God I typed all this on my iPhone damn ouch. But yeah I had a 4.7 gpa thanks to my school counting aps on a 5 scale for A’s too

@neonseri…oh wow, tough decision. and i’m especially sorry for your friend who had to put down harvard ( i didn’t even apply there)
out of curiosity, what are the benefits of regents? is it a full or partial scholarship? and you get priority for classes, right?

a friend of mine got into Stanford for wrestling and broke his arm or leg and lost his seat. At least that’s what his gf told me. Doesn’t that suck?

@milktea11
regent has scholarship but majority of them are based on “need”

on top of the "need"based scholarship, you also get an “honorary” $1000. woot woot. this number varies though i think from campus to campus.

then, you get your personal faculty adviser/mentor who will advise you in regards to anything academic, from your career aspirations to tips for grad school

i think we also get priority registration but i get that anyways without regents.

also, Berkeley will also help regent scholars in finding internship easily so we can improve our resume or CV.

guaranteed housing too for 4 years O_O but seriously, who wants to stay on campus for the whole 4 years?

^regents don’t get priority registration at cal

but i don’t even know how they chose regents for cal. so stupid, i got ucla regents but not cal. i interviewed for regents but berkeley ended up giving it to all my friends who interviewed and none of them are even attending cal. dumb **** sorry still ticked off about that haha.

wow. thats sad. O_O youre not missing out on much anyways

but yeah, i get priority registration anyways because im a veteran
it saddens me though how people gets depressed and angry because of telebears AKA telefail

oh nice, man you’re really old hahha. freshman?
yeah telebears wasn’t that bad to me, but i guess it gets worse later on. but probably not for you haha

Diivio, regarding the Berkeley Undergraduate Scholarship, you were right in that you need to have a 4.1 miniumum GPA for an incoming freshman and need is considered. The scholarship is based on academic merit and need. However, it is not awarded to everyone with a 4.1 and need. See below which I copied from the Berkeley financial aid website:

“The Berkeley Undergraduate Scholarship is UC Berkeley’s largest scholarship program for undergraduates. Each year 2,500 students receive a Berkeley Undergraduate Scholarship, funded from one or more of our 650 university and donor funds.”

Perhaps this is why some with a 4.1 or over did not receive the scholarship as they only award 2500 of them.

My son received this as well. With all the aid he got, he only has about $5,000 in federal loans which is a very nice financial aid package indeed. He got into UCLA, UCSD (Regents), UCSB (Regents), Harvey Mudd ($30,000 scholarship + grants totaling $45,000), waitlisted at MIT and Columbia (opted out of both). In the end, it came down to Cal and Harvey Mudd. Didn’t apply to Stanford, Cal Tech, or the rest of the Ivy League. He wanted a large university with Division I sports in California. Easy choice for him.

Lol Berkeley’s undergrad engineering program wouldn’t be highly ranked if the kids weren’t smart right? In fact I think their graduate programsvin almost all subjects are highly ranked right so they should have always had smartk kids but you were probably being sarcastic so I said all this for nothing lol :P
