the “io” comes from Mario and the remaining letters are part of my long first name, so yeah it wasn’t very original and I’m probably not very smart revealing this on a forum. Hopefully no crazy people read this, then again that might lead to a crazy adventure where some serial killer tries to stalk me on my road trip from Boise to Berkeley. Like a horror movie…lol.

^Thankfully “Diiv” alone doesn’t get you things about me on google so I’m safe I guess unless someone knows my full first name. Woot (sigh I get paranoid about safety online even though I leave so much holes in my security lol)

@ Diivio: Japanese rice wine is ‘sake’ and I think it’s ‘Bahasa Melayu’ instead of ‘Bhasa Malay’ Just sayin’.

8 days till I touch down in Berkeley!

^lol true it is Bahasa Melayu but I’ll go with the excuse that I was using a lesser known Malay dialect that was derived by the initial Portuguese who settled in Malaysia…(yeah I just made that up) lol

And yeah it is sake, dang it I feel like I just got culturally pwned…because I did lol.

Anda berbicara Bahasa Melayu Eloriel?

I’m new to the discussion on CC, so bear with me…
My son was accepted at NYU, UofI Urbana and UC Berkeley. He was one of the top 10 students in his graduating class…he’s dedicated and determined…
Each school offered a nice amount in grants…however UC Berkeley offered a $38,000 conditional grant, which meant borrowing about $9000 a year. Even though I work 5 jobs, I’m an independent contractor, and my taxes show $38,500 for agi, so needless to say, we were elated about the Berkeley grant…BUT…we found out a couple weeks ago there was “a glitch” in the offer. Apparently, the out of state fees were to have been taken out of the offer, and so we’re looking at a $12,000 grant rather than $38,000, which means borrowing $35,000 a year…
It’s of course too late for my son to get into either of the other schools he was accepted at, and not to mention, his decision was based a lot on the original grant offer…besides it being a good school…
I’m dazed…I’m still paying off on my own college loan ($13,000 left)…
I’m exhausted…70 plus hour work week…
I’m confused…
Does anyone know of any scholarship/grant $ available to out of state students that covers out of state fees?
Any suggestions besides enrolling in a hefty life insurance policy?

I can’t be sure, but I would think it’s a little late to apply to most scholarships/grants for this upcoming year because…well school is starting in about two weeks and the scholarships I know of at least had applications due before last school year ended. Did you talk with Berkeley FA office at all?

Yes, I’ve been in contact several times with the FA office. They offered a little more $, increased work study and increased loan amounts. I’ll be talking to them again next week. I’m rather appalled that this “glitch” happened in the first place. They have nothing to say except that it was “an error” and that out of state fees cannot be covered by the Berkeley grant (there is nothing on the website that I’ve found about this…so even if I would have thought to question the amount of the original offer, there’s nothing out there). I have explained that my son’s decision was based on their error…
I would be grateful if they meet us with the equivalent to what he would have received had he gone to his other choices…
I understand any other scholarship $ is pretty much way past deadline…but I’m trying to find any option possible to make college possible for my son…
Maybe there’s something out there that would waive out of state fees for one year (that’s $22,000+)…
I don’t know…I just don’t know anything anymore…

@Diivio: I don’t speak Malay, I’m Chinese But that’s a perk of living in a multi-racial country like Singapore I guess. You know a bit of everything.

@momwith5jobs: scholarships.berkeley.edu has resources for students and some scholarships have rolling admissions, you might want to check it out and apply for as many as possible. Also, try applying for work-study during the school year, that might help.

Okay; I know this won’t help much, but NYU isn’t exactly a generous university too.

@Eloriel Well I knew you were Chinese but I asked because Malaysia is a multiracial country with Malays (Mostly Muslims), Chinese (mostly Buddhist), and Indians (mostly Hindu like me), who were all born in Malaysia but can speak their native langauges as well as Malay so I assumed maybe a Singaporean Chinese could know Malay as well since Malaysia is right above Singapore

@RML I haven’t seen you post in a while! HI!

@momwith5jobs Wow I’m really sorry that happened to you and i hope it works out and I can’t really think of any extra advice beyond that already given. That is really unfortunate

^ My grandparents can, but the younger generations (including me) can’t >< Heh.
