If you’re living in the dorms, the meal plan is definitely necessary because there is only a communal kitchenette. If you’re living off campus then it’s not and you can cook whenever you’d like.

As far as taking the work study money, I’m not really sure about financial aid questions. If I remember right, I clicked yes and then just never worked, but something about that seems wrong (I’m positive I accepted it though and so far they haven’t asked me about working). I’d call financial aid when you get the chance and talk to them because I’m pretty sure what I did was a no-no.

hi eits25, thanks so much for offering your help!
do you have any experience with not fulfilling your conditions of admission?
i dropped my psych 001 course, and i didn’t notify them because i didn’t know i had to i included the class in my application update. psych 001 is not relevant to my major, and i have completed all my PREQs. would this jeopardize my entry into UCB? thanks in advance! :(

I can’t really answer this question. I’m sorry They are very serious about not fulfilling conditions of admission. I took a Military History course listed as MIL-10 that was cross-listed with a History requirement and the IGETC messed up and send an unfinished IGETC in. I received an e-mail telling me my admission was rescinded and had to jump through all kinds of hoops to get the IGETC office to fix their mistake. The best advice I can give you is to call/e-mail admissions ASAP and check with them. I’m assuming you dropped the course after the app update, in which case it’s a W? I don’t want to get your hopes up. I had multiple W’s on my transcripts, but if completing this course was part of your conditions of admission you better get in touch with them soon. Good luck and sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

i apply to econ i n berkely, and some ppl said to me that"if you goto cal just realize that you’re not actually in the econ major. You have to apply again to the major and you get in depending on your grades in your econ/stats in your first semeste".
So is that true? so i have to apply for econ again once i decide to go cal, wt if i can’t meet requirment, wt can i do then?

I don’t know enough about the Math/Econ departments, but from my experience the biggest factor in not letting non-majors into courses is the numbers. If you are able to do the work, and the class isn’t full, usually talking to a professor is enough to get around the red-tape and get into a class. You are required to take two courses outside of your major, so it is possible you’ll be able to take these classes. I’d say talk to an advisor, but sometimes it’s just easier to e-mail a professor or a department head (don’t tell them I sent you, just be polite and ask simple questions).

@eits25
thanks for the prompt reply! I just e-mailed my admissions officer. It was a brief e-mail/ damnn i should’ve wrote more
but no i did’t get a W, i didn’t get anything because I dropped before the W.
i hope if i do get rescinded, i would at least have a chance to be be accepteed into UCSD dammnn i wish i would’ve just taken that classSSSSS!

you are accepted into colleges and then have to declare your major. I am not familiar with the Econ department, but it would seem your friends are correct based on this:

I got accepted to EOP at Cal and I don’t really know what to think of this. Should I be excited?

Also, I was admitted as a Microbial biology major at CNR but I think that I really want to change to MCB at L&S is this an easy or difficult thing to do?

it all depends. I had two roommates who were transfers, but the rest of my floor were freshmen. It also depends where you end up (Unit 2 vs. Clark Kerr). It’s pretty random though.

I’m taking summer courses at berkeley and am already looking for a place to live. Is Cal Rentals significantly better than craigslist? Does it have more listings?

You mentioned a communal kitchenette in the dorms - what might I expect with that? Is there a stove? A toaster/toaster oven? An oven? Am I stuck with a fridge and a microwave?

Any tips on what I can say to my family to convince them Cal isn’t full of crazies?

What is the maximum number of units permitted? Is there a way to get an overload permit?

wow eits i really appreciate u coming on here and asking questions :)

my question: I was accepted as a philosophy major. I recently learned that philosophy at cal is very abstract and not exactly what i was looking for. i was wondering how hard it is for me to declare another major like media studies? i should have all the pre-req’s completed by the end of the fall semester. thnx man

You JUST NOW learned that philosophy at cal is very abstract? Philosophy everywhere is abstract. What did you think it was? Didn’t you take at least a few philosophy classes? Your post really confused me.

It was never frustrating for me because my largest classes were lower division and I took them my third semester so I was registering before a lot of people. If you’re in the sciences though I think it could get frustrating. At the same time though, transfers have pretty good positioning in Telebears, especially after being there one or two semesters.

absurdmike,

I found it a lot more helpful than craigslist and it does have a lot of rentals that aren’t listed on craigslist (a lot of the craigslist listings are a little further from campus). That being said, if you can find a good place on craigslist go for it.

amazonbkwrm,

The kitchenette in my dorm had a full fridge, stove, oven, microwave (that was terrible), and sink. There were cupboards as well, but I would never store my pots and pans in a public place (I trusted them not to be stolen, but it still would have bothered me).

As far as convincing your family it’s not full of crazy it would help to know more about your family. Conservative? Religious? If so, there are conservatives on campus. You can find pretty much any religious group you’d like too. I can tell you that it is certainly not the Berkeley it was in the '60’s. Sure you will run into hippies, but it’s not like the entirety of the undergraduate class walks around barefoot smoking herb.

I am not sure about permits to take more because I’ve never gone over 16 units, but it would seem you are able to petition to get one.

iambeowulf,
media studies would be pretty impacted. If you’re in L&S though I’m sure you could find something to suit your needs, but I don’t know what you’re interested in :

mike, i know what ur saying, but my friends at cal insisted at philosophy is different at cal than everywhere else… then i asked my friends at ucla how philosophy was, and they said it was great. so maybe abstract isnt the best word ahaha
