My Son just finished his first semester at University of South Carolina School of Music (Bass Trombone) with scholarship…if anyone is considering SC or colleges in FL, or has questions related to the process, or if your S/D plays trombone, feel free to contact me as it was and continues to be a true learning process.

Hello all, update on our process. Narrowed down to 6 schools Indiana, Illinois, Lawrence, DePaul, Florida State and Kentucky. Only Indiana had a pre-screen which my S passed. Just finished the audition scheduling process (and getting hotels–Joy!). Its amazing the time and money that goes into the process (aggravating that I am in Chicago area and all regionals for Percussion MUST be in person–what you can’t find somewhere that has a Timpani and Marimba?). Interesting to find that percussionists also have difficulties in that my son can’t practice Marimba/Timp at home (we have a drumset). Advise for aspiring Percussionists 1) arrange Senior year to ensure lunch and/or study hall/after school time when the band is not using the room (talk to your counselor) so you can practice 2)arrange access over Christmas Break–my son got his teacher to leave the Marimba in the hallway outside the locked band room. Advise from other parents as to auditions is to have a binder with each school’s music audition requirements and extra copies of all music with music resume, repertoire and copies of that schools music application with any other required forms to bring to the auditions (I think I got that from “music school visits” thread). I used spreadsheets and on advise from this thread separate folders for each school (with checklists for each school in the folder). Seems to be working but amazing how much work it is.
On a separate note my percussionist son is also a passionate jazz pianist. He recently heard about Jazz studies as a major and is thinking of minor or double major. Anyone else have experience with this?
Thanks to everyone for your contributions–I don’t think I could have made it this far without all of your help!!

Oh here’s another question. My S is accepted at the schools (not yet in music due to auditions). The schools are sending housing information with fees to pay but obviously we won’t even know if he is REALLY accepted until after April 1. Are music kids just out of luck as far as housing is concerned or do we just pony up the fees and apply for housing and back out if they don’t get in or don’t want to attend?

drumdad, check to see if the deposits are refundable. My daughter was in this situation with Jacobs. She sent in her deposit for housing because we were told that if she didn’t she would have a poor selection later. They refunded the whole amount when she didn’t enroll. We were able to do this all online.

paid deposits for 3 colleges. Picked 1 of those to enroll and got refunds back from the other 2.

@drumdad - it just depends. Most schools will refund all or most of the housing deposit if he doesn’t end up attending. My son got into FSU’s music program and they were his second choice - so we went ahead and paid the housing deposit to ensure he didn’t miss out. I believe it was $150 and we got $100 back, so the $50 insurance was worth it.

My advice - do all that are a 100% refund. For those that aren’t, stick to ur top 3 and play the odds that he will get into one, otherwise that $50 can add up!

Thanks to all–sounds like the best bet is to just pony up the housing to hold his place in line for his choices. S at Florida State this weekend (on his own!!). Anyone out there know anything about the school/percussion program?

Housing close to Jacobs in Indiana can get tight, which is why if the school is in the top half of ones your son wishes to attend placing a deposit is a good idea. If your son is under 18 you will have to go through a proxy process through their system to put a deposit in (They will send you many emails on this). The bottom line on Jacobs is 300 down and 200 back if your son does not attend. Good Luck!
