SOAR Program 2015?

@DressingIron What was the prompt for the essay? I applied literally the day the application was opened in July and have no recollection of what I wrote about haha. I just need someone to jog my memory!

‘Tell us what interests you most about Rice’ was the prompt, I believe, @ethiopienne

Oh yeah!! I talked about how I’m fascinated in their minor Global Health Technologies and how I see Rice as a portal to the rest of the world.

Kind of unconventional to talk about a minor now that I think about it, but it worked!

What about you? @DressingIron

@ethiopienne I dropped my y’alls, put on airs and wrote a thing about critical theory (critical theory as in like, interpretation of texts not marxist critical theory) and how excited I was that Rice had an interdisciplinary center that dealt with critical theory.

In retrospect, my essay topic was kind of brown nose-y and I hope that my actual college essays are better.

I don’t want to assume but, I assume by the Global Health Tech minor that you’re looking to be a pre-med?

That’s a cool approach though, pretty complex! Are you looking to be a humanities major? @DressingIron

Good guess, I am looking to be a pre-med! With as much as an emphasis in global/public health as I can possibly do!

Question: Did you (or anyone else for that matter) have any problems with your email not going through to Rice? I got two failed to deliver notifications in a row.

@ethiopienne Oh, definitely. I pretty much have to be a humanities major; a STEM curriculum would crush my tiny weasel brain.

And that’s awesome! I think Rice has an articulation agreement with Baylor Medical School for Rice UGs that want to become doctors.

And, god, I think so but I can’t recall what the issue was or why it was happening. If you’re copy pasting the email address, try typing each character individually. I think that’s what I did.

That’s so cool, global health kind of has a humanities aspect of it that I’m really hoping gets incorporated into the more science-y part! @DressingIron

I didn’t know that, sounds amazing! These are the things I hope to learn that weekend!

I’m still having problems, I’ve sent it like 5 times. I don’t know what to do except call them tomorrow.

@ethiopienne Are you sending your registration thing to soar@rice.edu?

And, I just looked it up and apparently the Baylor/Rice thing is something you apply to going into Rice and then if you’re accepted into Rice (and that program) you have guaranteed acceptance to Baylor Medical School

Yeah, I’ve noticed there’s a non-trivial push towards more humanities minded pre-meds and more humanities minded medical students; I think a few med schools are even dispensing with the normal required UG course load and giving UG humanities majors a path to becoming doctors – which is interesting.

Yeah! I’ve sent it about 5 times and I’ve gotten the exact same mail delivery notice back. Pretty frustrating bc I’m so excited haha. I’ll have to just wait and call/try again tomorrow! @DressingIron

I didn’t realize you were talking about the BS/MD program. It’s a highly competitive fast track to med school. I’m applying through Questbridge so I can’t apply to those types of programs without the whole application process getting really messy.

I’ve noticed that too! I think it’s great, we’re going to have a very well-rounded physician work force.

THIS IS SO EXCITING!
I just got accepted as well! I made an account just to join the forum haha!
I can’t wait to meet all of you at the program! I’ll be coming from California.
@DressingIron @whynotnow @psywar @ethiopienne

@gurly34 Congratulations on your acceptance! Looking forward to meeting you too! Any luck with the email confirmation…or am I the only one having trouble?

@ethiopienne I haven’t had any trouble so far. I’m filling out the registration form that came w/ the e-mail confirmation, and nothing’s crashed on me so far.

@ethiopienne Yeah, I had thought it was different from a BS/MD program but apparently I was recalling incorrectly.

And welcome @gurly34! And, of course, congrats on getting accepted to SOAR! And usually people have trouble with getting the registration form sent; filling it out isn’t usually an issue.

@gurly34 I agree with @DressingIron, my filling out of the form went smoothly and I hit a wall when I tried to send it that’s why I’m curious to see if yours worked or if it failed to send too.

@ethiopienne Congrats! BTW - you’ll meet my son there, not me, but I’m thrilled you got in. He’ll be the 6’ 2" soccer playing - chemical engineer type, from the Austin area. :)>-

@whynotnow My son has school Monday too, but at his public school, seniors are allowed 4 excused days to visit colleges. Does your school offer something similar?

@DressingIron @ethiopienne Ahh, I see. I just tried to send it and mine isn’t going through either.

@gurly34 @ethiopienne PM me and I’ll send you the email address that worked for us. I had the same email bounces that you are having. I tried sending from a variety of accounts, both from home and work. I think the soar email address is not configured correctly.

Awesome, thank you! @psywar

Looking forward to meeting everyone! I’m so excited!

Thanks for the working email address too! I just PM’ed you. @psywar

I just got accepted at 5 pm EST yesterday!! I’m so excited to meet you all!!
