SoCal CalSo Program

I am hoping to go to SoCal program but I was wandering if I will miss out on anything if I go to that program rather than CalSo at Berkeley.

id like to know more about this too since i signed up for the one in socal

I emailed Berkley and got a reply:

Hello,

The difference is that the socal program is significantly shorter and you don’t get to enjoy the campus activities or stay in the dormitories, although, the socal one is cheaper and there is not as much traveling. The socal program is mainly just advising and signing up for classes; while the calso here is more about the Cal experience. Hope this helps.

Tristan

I went to the socal one and it was all right. I am the type of people who really hate group activities like learning how to shout GO BEARS so I didn't really enjoy my CalSo b/c that was basically what we did.

I would say.. if you are going to calso and you are in LA, just go to the SoCal one b/c it's much cheaper. You are going to Berkeley anyways and it doesn't make a difference if you get to stay in the dorm one extra night. Personally, I wouldn't want to spend that much money and time just to go to Cal and stay there for a night while I am going to stay there for like 4 years.

Why is it that when I log in, I don't see any socal programs available to me? Is it because I'm not eligible for them?

If so, that sucks.

where do you find information about the CalSo Program in Southern California. Could someone give me the link cuz I can only find the orientations that are up in Cal. Thanksss.

It shows up as one of the options.
If you don't see it, I think you are ineligible.

Yea, not everyone was offered it.

bumping this thread for someone who was asking.

oh what i dont see socal in my options… this is dumb i like 2 hours away from los angeles =/ this would have been really helpful… I guess ill try giving berkeley a call about that. Thanks a lot

i haven’t signed my SIR - does that mean i won’t be able to see this?

Yes, you can access CalSO after you submit your SIR (or so I believe)

The SoCal CalSo is invite only. I ditched most stuff except advising. You’ll miss the police chief giving what feels like a 10 hour speech on safety (don’t walk alone at night - that’s basically what he says), You miss “bonding” such as ice breakers, you miss campus tours and some workshops that you can get info from on the websites (Housing, Fin Aid). All the info can be found online

“The SoCal option is available only to Pell Grant students, in Letters & Science and Engineering, who live in Southern California.”

That really is not fair because I don’t have 400 dollars to burn just to attend orientation up north. I emailed them and hopefully they will let me attend.

Yeah, I just realized plane ride + early accommodations + calso charge is 300$+ for me already… sucks… but it’s for my education so…

Also, wasn’t SoCal CalSo didn’t have College of Letters and Science I believe…

Easy solution: don’t go to calso! Quite a lot of people who are out of state (and exceptionally internationals) don’t go. Not a big deal. You’ll probably be screwed for signing up for classes whether or not you go to calso. Besides, first semester classes aren’t that important. :P

The SoCal CalSO is offered to students in L&S and the College of Engineering.
Dates are 19 June and another for 20 June. I’m in L&S, so I’m not sure of they’re the same dates for CoE.

June 19 and 20 are also for CoE.
