If I am a top athlete recruit for soccer (ranked top 6 in the US) with a 3.45 gpa and average SATs, do I have a good chance of getting into University of Washington?? Please help.
Yes, if you are recruited to the team. The NCAA has minimums and some schools have their own minimums which are a little higher than the NCAA, but a 3.4 will be fine. There is also a minimum for SAT/ACT.
If you are applying without being a recruit, probably not high enough.
If you were recruited by Jamie Clark, then he is the one who would tell you where you stand for admissions. Broadly, an unweighted 3.45 is probably ok – the UW Common Data Set shows that the middle 50% of students get between roughly a 540-660 on the CR section of the SAT, and a little higher on math (probably because there is such strong STEM at the University. So, depending on what you mean by “average” – you could be fine. Someone who is sought after as a recruit, and falls within the middle of the non-recruited applicants, is probably fine. If someone was substantially below the bottom 25%, that would likely be an issue, at least for Men’s Soccer.
For reference, the UW Common Data Set shows the unweighted GPA of enrolled freshmen in 2015 as follows:
3.75 to 4.00: 64.24%
3.50 to 3.74: 27.16%
3.25 to 3.49: 6.52%
3.00 to 3.24: 1.52%
Under 3.00: 0.56%
On the Common Data set, it is hard to know whether schools use the weighted or unweighted GPA. In Indiana, where we live, Bloomington appears to use the weighted on the Common Data Set, if available. A question for UW admissions would be whether the reported data is weighted or unweighted.
“C11. Percentage of all enrolled, degree-seeking, first-time, first-year (freshman) students who had high school grade-point averages within each of the following ranges (using 4.0 scale).” Thus, the reported data is unweighted.
Indiana, Bloomington 2015 CDS:
“C11 Percentage of all enrolled, degree-seeking, first-time, first-year (freshman) students who had high school grade-point averages within each of the following ranges (using 4.0 scale).”
3.75 to 4.00: 48.33%
3.50 to 3.74: 20.58%
3.25 to 3.49: 16.15%
3.00 to 3.24: 10.59 %
Under 3.00: 4.35%
Also appears to report unweighted GPA data.
@UWfromCA We are in-state in Indiana, and understand from counselors that Indiana uses weighted, no matter what CDS says. People in state don’t generally think that 1/2 of the instate students at Bloomington have a 3.75 or above. With a large percentage of OOS admissions, perhaps those OOS students fall almost entirely in the highest gpa range, while instate students fill out much of the lower ranges. The question for the OP is to find out from the coach what the expectations are.
while soccer is not football, being recruited to a Pac12 men’s soccer program, especially one as competitive as Washington’s, is a lot pull in admissions. I don’t know if the athletic recruits’ numbers are in the common data set or not, but I do know that you’ll get a lot of pull. As @Midwestmomofboys said, the coach will know. It’s not like at a Div III school where admissions really does run the show. The coaches at Washington have, not only sway, but a formal arrangement with admissions and they get their kids if they meet certain minimums.
If you’re being actively recruited, and he knows your numbers, then you’ll get in. Just ask him. He knows.
