hey.. i know that football is THE THING at Umich when anyone talks about sports.. but what about soccer.. are they many students interested? are there many teams? just wanted some overview.. and i think such stuff is equally important if one wants an enjoyable college experience..

UMich's soccer program is... uhh... wanting would be best I guess...

There's always intramural though! ^_^

lol..yeah.. may be ill get interested in football.. coz there seems to be some sort of craze at michigan.. newayz.. cant wait to GO BLUE !!

our team isnt great, but if you're interested, you might be able to make club or somethiing.

Our varsity team is definitely lacking, which I've heard people blame on the coach, who didn't think was particularly good when I went to U of M's high school camp a few years ago. Pretty much no following from the students, I'd estimate less than 20 show up to any given game. Club team is pretty good as far as club teams go, going 13-1-4 in 2005. Whether or not you'd be able to make it...I know not.

Intramural soccer is awesome. My team won the Indoor and Outdoor Residence Hall Division A soccer championships (beating chibear's team in the second game of the regular season for outdoor). For outdoor IM soccer, I think they have Reshall, a Frat league, 2 or 3 men's leagues, a few women's leagues, and reshall division fielded somewhere around 8 teams. Not as many people sign up for indoor soccer (technically minisoccer, played on a basketball court with a size 3 or 4 ball), but there were still roughly 8 teams in the Reshall league, two men's leagues, apparently there's some graduate school league. The way it works is you have three regular season games, and then they split the teams into an upper and lower division based on their record, and do a single elimination playoff. If you are a skilled warrior, you will have the eternal glory of earning a IM championship t-shirt, saving the dollar you would have to spend to buy a leftover one from the IM sports department, along with the shame of having to explain why you have the t-shirt if you lost.

It's also possible to get together some people for a pickup game at either Elbel field or Palmer Field (depending on where you live), which I did a few times.

Basically soccer isn't a big thing for people to watch here, but if you're interested in playing there's plenty of opportunities. For IM soccer, even if you don't have enough interest for your own team, you can sign up and they'll randomly assign you to one. And the whole football thing is unavoidable, which you will realize once you experience gameday. The entire city is pretty much transformed. Always lots of drinking after the game (to celebrate a victory or to console a loss), and if Michigan loses, you can tell because everybody is just depressed.

Will i get discriminated if i want to play but suck?! XD lol

hehe.. nerj i still think you would be able to make it into some of the intramural teams that arent very good.. ive been playing soccer for 5 years now.. but i don't how good/bad i would be relative to other players there.. guess ill just have to wait and see

nerj i played IM soccer this year and I'd never played a game of soccer in my life. My teammates had to tell me the rules and general strategy before games, so anyone can play and it's a good time.
