Social Atmoshphere and Party Life

How is the social and party life at UofR ? It seems to be a very close knit community because of its relatively small size, and it seems as that can be both a blessing and a curse. I've heard mixed things. One of my best friends who just finished his freshman year elsewhere decided to choose another university over UR last year because he said the party life "sucked," and he was also leery of the fact that Rochester has more stringent policies than most with alcohol and security breaking up parties. I am not much of a partyer myself, but I do like to go out and have a good time every now and then. It's nice to know that the option is always available, even if not always used. Just curious, I guess.

Social Life has many aspects man, like what type are you really looking into? I think you are looking at the "party" scene, so yeah, there are some really nice parties there with 23% frat scene and then a lot of independent parties on the weekend. Now, this is all good for the first two years, but after a while you will get sick of the same ol parties every weekend so thats just a headsup. Rochester as a city offers many escapes with some clubs, cafes , a lot of great festivals/activities there.

I think though that the more important close-knit community is what counts. After your first months at UR , you will feel like a part of a community, and have many friends to hang out with and enjoy your time. So if anything i'll call it a more "laid back" social scene , with PLENTY of things to do, a great/fun time (at least when i experienced it with my visit where there were SOO many places to go i was hopping from place to place during my 2 night stay) but the scene isnt as heavy as big colleges like Penn state univ. or University of Florida haha.

Best of luck :)

What I've heard is security doesn't care if you're drinking until you start puking...

Interesting, yea like I said, I'm not a huge party person. I always thought I'd be going to a big city/large sized school for college, so I guess I'll be in for more of the same in a tight knit community. I live in a pretty small suburb, but things are just too quiet for my liking, that's why I was curious. I always envisioned something different in college, but Florida/California were too far away for my parents to stomach. I guess the party atmosphere is a part of what college is all about, so I look forward to experiencing it to some degree.

Oh yea, one completely unrelated question: Will UofR keep offering free Napster downloads to students, or was that only a 1 year deal ? I couldn't find out exact details of the contract, but it definetly would be nice to be able to legally dload free music...I hate all the adware/spyware associated with P2P programs these days...

They'll keep doing it, the napster that is.

Are you pre-frosh? or prospective?

I will definitely say that once you are on campus things are NOT quiet hehe, far from it in that everything is going on with 5000 kids from 17 to 22 in a campus together..wow :)

I'm pre-frosh, so I'll be there in the fall ^_^.

sweet, make sure you check out the 2009 website/message board, all the information you can dream of is there.

Yea, I just discovered the site today. I went to an old thread on this Rochester board I remembered about how to activate my rochester email. Unfortunately, my parents have my folder with my student id#...I'll have to pry it away from them sometime so I can set it up.

khan_T1m, are you attending rochester right now or are you pre-frosh?

pre-frosh =)

yourself?

pre frosh

I was just wondering because you are very knowledgeable about the school

Ahh, gee thanks, I did a LOT of research on the school, I'm ready to attend in the fall :)

I think us premeds will definitely need a healthy social/party life. Just not to an excess.

definitely I agree.

Khan_T1m, what major are you planning to do if you are going to be a premed?

hey, yea ive heard that the party life is nothing to be ashamed of with a quarter of the school greek and all--and ive heard good things about the city, im just a prefroshe tho

its atmosphere************

I'm probably doing a Bio-Neuroscience bs, maybe dabble in some BME and Polysci..finance...we will see :)
