I have read "hateful" comments on Hopkins, as a school whose 70% pre-med kids do "anything" to get their GPA up! I need some honest comments. I was strongly considering Hopkins, but those comments made me develop such a "yuk" factor towards it. I have heard there are parties, but only with the same old people, and competition is in the SKY!!!

Is all this true? Give me personal examples if you dont mind.

Ok. I get it AdmissionsDaniel. But again why so much “misconception” about Hopkins? Hopkins only gets an A- in collegepowler’s academics, and other schools like Caltech, MIT, Havey Mudd, Chicago, and Reed all get A+; however, I have not heard much about their students being “cutthouthers” or whatever the term. I am not saying I believe all that I hear, but do you have any suggestions as why Hopkins is the target more often the others or am I making a generalization?

In my opinion, any school that recruits average/marginal athletes into Division I sports (ic, Ivy League, Stanford, Duke) are regarded as ‘more fun’. Schools that are mainly division III that are much more centered around academics and scholarship are viewed as more scholarly (Hopkins, Chicago, MIT, CalTech).

I don’t think marginal is exactly the work for Stanford and Duke. They recruit both amazingly good basketball players. And Duke recruits amazing Lacrosse players. Though the Ivy League school recruitment I agree is quite average (except rowing). Just my thought.

PS. JHU Lacrosse recruitment is at the same level of competitiveness as Duke. Many times they try to recruit the same person.

As a future applicant to JHU, the cutthroat rumors obviously bother me as well, but there is something else that really “grinds my gears.” Sooo many people are ignorant about JHU’s stellar departments. Everybody thinks pre med, case closed! Ummm can we just look at the History and International Relations departments as just a couple of examples!?!? lol I know I am taking this off topic, but this is just to show that a lot of these bits of “proliferated fiction” are so ridiculous. I’m just glad I had AdmissionsDaniel to help dispel the rumors for me. Otherwise, I would not have kept Hopkins on my list; That would have been tragic! Keep your fingers crossed for the guy that hopes to study Cultural Anthropology at Hopkins in Fall 2010!! <<Me! haha

A+ versus A- on some random college ranking site … not sure I would really base my college search on that kind of data.

First, I disagree that Hopkins is the “target” more often … in fact some of the schools you named have often bit hit with the “competitive” and “cut-throat” commentaries as much as if not more than Hopkins.

As far as why, well there are many reasons. Many of those who push forward the comments about Hopkins being competitive are just making assumptions and have little to no experience of how the undergraduate programs work. As well, there is some foundation in the distant history (60s,70s,80s) of Hopkins when academics was the main (and only) focus of the University. I’d also say that many Hopkins students are driven and aspire to accomplish great things … that can be intimidating to some.
