Social/Dating Trends...

At Yale do people tend to stick to their RCs/Freshmen halls for groups of friends, or do people compile a diverse group of friends from throughout the undergraduate college?

What about dating? Hook-ups vs. relationships vs. dating? (which ever is more prominent do you think this is a Yale thing or just generally a college thing?)

I'm really tired of reading the freaking-out-about-grades-and-tiny-details posts, so I thought I'd delve into a different realm..

thanks!

This sounds interesting!

I'd like to know more about this too.

My interviewer said he was friends with a lot of people outside his own rc, but that the majority of his drinking buddies were from his college.

It seems like the RC system at Yale is like extending a Dorm system anywhere else.
For instance, at Cornell, someone living in Mary Donlon (poor them, lol) would be chummy with the guys on his hall....but would probably also have friends from other North Campus dorms, because they all eat at Appel. He might also make friends with someone living in Baker(soph/jun) when they took a class together.

I'd imagine you'd make friends first in your rc, then in classes, then in random ways: clubs/activities/dining/getting plastered wandering into a bad part of New Haven, getting rescued by this really pretty girl, etc.

As for the dating scene in Yale....I mean...young kids away from home - what do you think will be going on?

We should find recent alums/students to comment on this.

I would rather that a pretty boy rescue me, but I see what you're saying ;) As for the dating thing though, I'm more a relationship person so I just like to know if I could end up at a school where this is really hard to find, or a school that has some of every kind of dating, or a school where everyone's paired off and makes you feel claustrophobic, you know? I'd prefer it was a little of everything...classic Goldilocks syndrome, but I'm over it.

Any alums/current students out there who want to chime in?

Hehehe, If I get into Yale, I'll be sure to wander the streets at 3 AM keeping a lookout for damsels in distress.

Wait, what am I saying? I'm not a pretty boy.

I mean, I don't think Yale somehow picks people exclusively interested in casual sex (they better have at least a few...) or people who want to grow old with someone (they better have at least a few....). I'm sure you can find what you want in people at any school

It's true. But I still wish someone at Yale would answer (hint...)

I would laugh if your dating preference were a question on the application. I can just see it now:

"In order to ensure that were are able to increase the amount of diversity in all aspects of life at Yale please check which most applies to your dating preference
a) hooking up
b) casual dating
c) exclusive relationships"

d) Other: Please Explain.

"I like to think of myself as trysexual. I'll try anything sexual."

Can you say, 'hook'?

There was something vaguely euphemistic about that last statement...:P

What would be the reaction of the committee reading an essay on being a sex addict?

I hope I didn't make a mistake by sending that in...

It was not meant to be......But now that you've pointed it out, the post reads much more funnily.

This is a side note on the social thing, but what is J.Crew? I hear it is a store but I don't think it is in Texas bc NOBODY and I mean nobody wears this and I had not heard of it until I got on CC.

I'm in the same boat dbate. North FL land of rednecks is camo, holister, abercrombie, generic clothing, and "ghettofabulous".

Dbate, don't you live in Austin? There's a J.Crew in one of the outlet malls here. I go all the time :)

Lots of my friends wear it.

No I live in Houston (well in the suburbs). Hollister and abercrombie seem to be what ppl wear not this j.crew.

lol J Crew is like casual-wear, nice clothes... pretty preppy almost 'church clothes'-type stuff but still looks pretty good and can be worn for like any occassion. i work for 'em its good stuff... kinda expensive tho so thats where the preppy thing comes into play.

so do the ivy league schools go for casual sex or is that just taboo since everyones so goddamn respectable? im a recovering sex addict at age 17 so ...

Nahhhh, the stereotype people have of the Ivy leagues is one formed during the 20's where everything was just fine and dandy.

Sorry to distract this thread but how do alumni sends thier reports to the admission office? I know i could start a new thread but that is such a hassle for a simple question.

Oh and I hope there are girls looking for the long lasting relationship thing bc that is definitely the kind of guy I am.

Collegehopefull: It's true, everything's more funny with euphemisms strung on...but we're teenagers so we've all got the dirty minds of 13 year old boys who just learned what sex is (no offense...)

Dbate: That's nice to hear! Few guys that I've ever met (particularly the horny 17 year old ones that seem to be annoyingly abundant) want to be tied down so I would have though that it wouldn't be much different in college.

I'm definitely a relationships kind of girl though, so I can tell you that if I end up at Yale there will be at least one of us (no internet flirtation intended..haha)

In terms of the J.Crew thing, there's a thread about dress style on here and I posted a link to the website so people who'd never heard of it could see for themselves. I'm from New England, birth region of J.Crew...so you know...

Do you guys think the sock on the doorknob thing really happens? (or works for that matter...I have a feeling the "walk in" rate in college is mad high, prepare yourself to walk in to your dorm at least twice a year to find your roommate doing the nasty on top of your Chemistry textbook...)

sorry this post is so long, I was trying to respond to everyone's :)

isn't it supposed to be a hat or a tie?

but yes im sure theres some communication done between roommates to make sure it doesnt happen... and rofl @ 'doing the nasty'

I'm also abstinent (Christianity ftw). So i figure I might date like at most 4 girls during college, assuming each relationship lasts only a year.

About internet flirting it depends. Blonde or brunette, bc I like the brunettes.
