My son is interested in Davidson and would like to know more about the social life and work load. How intense is it? Are students stressed out by the amount of work? He might be a varsity athlete while there, and we are concerned that he will not have enough downtime.

Thank you.

Hi! Current Davidson sophomore here. I realize that this is ages after you posted, but this could help other people looking at Davidson. Take my perspective as you want to-I am one student with one experience.

Work load is intense. Absolutely. However, it is not impossible-it just takes some getting used to. I had a 3.99 in high school and a 3.19 my first semester of Davidson-needless to say, it was a HUGE adjustment. But you learn how to deal with it and balance work with social life. I am now getting all A’s, but I work my butt off for it. Realistically, the people who do well in school are not going out every Wednesday/Friday/Saturday. At least in my experience, it’s not really that there’s a ton of homework, it’s more that there’s just so much material covered. People are very, very stressed but I also think that people spend too much time on Facebook and whining to people about how stressed they are. I am captain of an organization, vice president of another, involved in an eating house, and in a couple of other things, and I watch TV probably about 3-4 hours a day (again, I have all A’s). People say that the best thing about Davidson is that the work ethic will make everything seem so much more earned/worth it. To a degree, I think that’s true, but it also makes me angry that professors sometimes make work hard/excessive simply because “Davidson is hard” and not because we need it.

Social life is interesting. Freshman year especially, people go pretty nuts-people go out on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. We have eating houses and fraternities, which is what the “going out” culture really revolves around. Honestly, everyone who is social and goes out is in an eating house or frat. The social life is very repetitive. Hang out with people in the halls/apartments, go to F (senior apartments), go to court party. Social life would be a bit cut off for a varsity athlete, but his team would probably be most of his social life anyway.
