From what i heard, BC social life is mostly limited to sporting events, dorm parties and binge drinking and that many students stay on campus and do not venture out into Boston or surrounding schools very often. Don’t get me wrong, I do drink occasionally and want to have a good time, but i also want a social life that doesnt always revolve around drinking and football games, and I definately want to take advantage of the beautiful city of Boston.
Also, I have heard that it is mostly comprised of white rich preppy kids and it is very cliquey.
To what extent are these stereotypes true?

I’d say football games are the only sporting events that are a big part of the social scene. The other sports, while they have a good attendance, are not nearly as big social events. People go to football games even if they don’t like football. There are students that never leave campus and some that leave every single day. That’s up to you! I get off campus and go into Boston basically every weekend with my friends and some weekdays. It’s super easy to take advantage of the city and depending on what you want and your group of friends, you will go often or almost never.

Most students at BC are middle-to-upper class. This is the case at ALL private schools for obvious reasons. That’s not to say there aren’t students of other socioeconomic classes here on financial aid. I guess you could say the overall culture is somewhat preppy. It’s not really that cliquey, but I guess it depends on how you define cliquey. And BC is made up of 25% students of color, which is more diverse or just as diverse than most schools. I guess it’s less diverse religiously because 70% of students classify themselves as Catholic, but that’s just what they check down on paper; not nearly this amount are religious. Diversity is REALLY stressed here now. I’ve almost become sick of hearing the word.

I’d say BC has a “culture” but there’s many different kinds of people here, it may just take a little more effort to find them. But once you do, it’s worth it to be here!

i’ve read a lot about BC being preppy and kids dressing up for class but i really can’t get an understanding of what that means. are all the kids walking around in slacks and j crew sweaters and colalred shirts? i just find it hard to believe that so many kids want to get dressed up all the time.

cb911, my son had many of the same concerns as you before he decided to attend BC. (He is now a sophomore there.) He has absolutely NO interest in sports – any sports! – and does not drink either. But he is having a wonderful time at BC because he has found many friends who feel the same way. He and his roommates and their girlfriends (also BC students) usually take the train into downtown Boston about once a month to attend concerts, eat at Faneuil Hall/Quincy Marketplace, hang out in Boston Commons, etc. He loves the city and I suspect that he will try to stay in the area when he graduates, rather than head back west.

And although he is white, he is not rich or preppy. He would die before he would wear a collared polo or J. Crew. He is jeans and T-shirts all the time! :)

So rest assured that BC has a broad range of people with different interests. You will surely find “your own kind” among the student population and can have a great social life.

Hey thenatural: I don’t think most people consider slacks jcrew sweaters and colared shirts “dressing up.” What do you expect college kids to wear to class? T-shirts and FUBU sweats? (and by the way, most preppy kids don’t wear J Crew anymore).

Most students at BC do not roll out of bed and then go to class, especially not the girls. I personally like that, I feel like I am dressing to go somewhere and not just jumping in and out of my bed. Also, I was never allowed to do that at home so I don’t here haha.

You definitely see BC sweats, as sweatshirts are worn a lot. But many students dress for class. You will see students who have money and you might describe as “preppy,” and you will see students who dress however they want too. But, I wouldn’t describe BC as a sweats school.

If you’re an athlete that’s a different story… haha

ok SJUHawk so you’re saying they wear suits? what’s in between business casual and suits tell me.

I think “dressing up” just means not rolling out of bed and wearing sweats or PJs. When I visited Villanova i saw what they meant by dressing up. Dressing up can just be a collared shirt and nice jeans. I think dressing up pertains more to girls because there is a huge gap between not dressing up and dressing up for a girl. Whiles a guy can look decent with a nice graphic T and a good pair of jeans. I guess according to SJUHawk J. Crew isn’t considered preppy anymore although i always thought it was. If anything companies like aeropostale American Eagle Hollister and Abercrombie and Fitch arent considered true preppy attire. Thenatural don’t worry i heard kids only REALLy dress up for a month or so. But people still go to class presentable. (not in Pjs lol)

yea i would never do that i juse think business casual is too much for going to class. its ok to look sharp tho obviously

Social life at BC?

“beer, party, beer, more party, and something to do with the Vatican”
a quote taken from an alumni

but aside from that, they have top notch academics

JCrew, at least for guys, has turned into boy band clothes.
