Is there any truth to the stereotypes about Colby students? I've heard that they tend to be conservative, rather stuck-up rich kids with a tendency to drink heavily. Personally this strikes me as a bit of a harsh judgment, so it would be interesting to hear some other people's impressions of the students there.

Well, the majority of the people I met drank heavily, however, i only met a few stuck-up rich kids

I def. don't think that Colby tends to be conservative, at all. It is a private school with a 40,000 price tag, so kids may tend to be wealthy and I've heard the drinking at all the nescacs, not just colby, tends to be pretty heavy.

When I visited, I didn't think the school was conservative at all, it was more the opposite. I stayed overnight and most of the people I met were friendly. I didn't think they were stuck up at all.

yeah, now that i think about it I only met one "stuck-up" kid who wasn't really that stuck up. I think he jsut thoguht I was inferior to him because of my age... he was really nice to everyone else there though, lol.

I have visited the campus on two separate occasions. As for whether the students are preppy, I'd say that they weren't as preppy as many of the NESCAC schools that I visited. Sure, there were some preppy kids, but not an overwhelming number. I did not find the students to be stuck up. In fact, everyone was very friendly to me. One of the reasons that I chose Colby is that every time I visited the campus, whether it was for a tour or for an overnight, I got a great feeling from the students.

thanks rt -- that's really encouraging, compared to the general opinion on here. since you seem to know, what's the normal activity like? Is there a town most people hang out in, or a student center, or mostly in the dorms? Are people usually outside or inside, etc? thanks...

Thanks everyone. It's comforting to hear some good feedback on the school. I just got accepted with excellent financial aid; I'm looking forward to touring it tomorrow and getting a feel for the campus life.

sorry for the late reply. well, the school has a lot of events to keep kids busy. when I did an over night, there was a concert with Rahzel. It was fun. There is a student center but it is really small and I was told that they planned to build a bigger one. I was told by the people that I was with that there is always something to do on campus.

my dad teaches at colby, and though i'm in high school, i managed to get two classes there this year, and i go to their parties and dances and stuff. i'm going to pomona next year, but that's because i grew up here, and everyone needs a change of scenes. this year, colby was really fun for me. there is a lot of drinking, but i never drank. some people are a bit insecure and think you have to to be cool, but i wasn't even a freshman, just a pre-frosh and i usually could find a bunch of pretty cool people to hang out with, in various states ranging between sober and intoxicated. there's alcohol if you want to go find it. my friends drank, and other than telling me i was missing out once or twice i did not feel pressure. i think there's slightly more pressure on the sports teams or if your friends are all about appearances. mine were down to earth, and respected my choices a lot. conservative??? righhhhhhht... there are some preppy wealthy people here, i think it comes with the liberal arts price tag, but there are all kinds of other people too. conservative, no not really. colby's administrators would probably love to have a few more conservative students so that the ones that are there stop whining about being outnumbered. colby's the kind of place where most of us try sort of kind of to not say derisive things about the uninformedness of conservativism. it's a liberal place all in all.

next year in california you just made me really happy. thank you.
