What is the social scene like?
How are the people?
What do people do for fun on weekends?
(please describe in great detail)

Yeah I’m really interested in this topic too since Duke is one of my top choices.

okay guys seriously the thing you need to understand about any college (Duke, UT, UMich, Swarthmore, etc.) is that it depends on 1) Who your friends are 2) Where you live on campus relative to where the party/party people are 3) What & How Much of it you want to do

If you come to Duke I guarantee that you will love the social life. Whatever that is for you. My best friend goes out 5 times a week, I go out once, maybe twice.

It would take me well over the character limit to describe social life here, suffice to say it is amazing and you’ll never regret coming here.

There are also a decent number of dance clubs nearby that everyone goes to after parties.

I love Duke, you can study all weekend or party til 4am every night. It’s totally your choice. It’s so open and free. It’s glorious here.

^^ Agree.

The general attitude here is “Work hard, Play hard”. . . at least for me and my friends :D

What is the general style of dressing?
Is it preppy or more of a jeans and tee shirt type of deal?

Oh, and two to USNAgolden2014 I am guessing you are a Duke now?
If so I am worried about admittance. I have great grades and good EC, along with being a URM from the Midwest but I have a low ACT score. Is duke the type of school that will only take kids with a certain ACT score?

^ There are definitely some people who dress preppy, but most people dress normally (i.e. jeans and t-shirt)… I don’t dress preppy at all, and I’ve never felt the slightest bit out of place.

really? i feel like a lot of people here dress in a really preppy style (guys and girls) and as i don’t dress like that at all, i feel like i stand out quite a bit. that being said, there’s a little bit of everything here. also, you should just be yourself. you’ll find people who are like you no matter who you are or how you dress.

as for the social scene, there tends to be stuff every friday/saturday (and most thursdays) and some people go out thursday friday saturday, some people never go out, and some do so on occasion. its all about what you choose. many parties, especially during first semester, are open, so you’ll meet a lot of people that way if you choose to do that.
on weekends… many people go out to clubs and parties. as for durham, you pretty much need a car to get far in durham. thats one of the downsides. theres a ton going on within duke’s campus, but if you need to go to target, you want to go to the mall, or you’re looking to see a new movie, you’ll need a car. thats why most (if not all) of duke’s social scene is on-campus

-i’m a freshman, so maybe my opinions are skewed, but this is what i’ve observed for the past year! feel free to PM me with any questions
