Social life at Duke

Any comments on the of social life at Duke? Quality of ladies, prevalence/abundance/lack of alcohol? Lot of time spent studying on Saturday night? High-school-esque cliquiness? Preppiness/anti-preppiness?

Let's hear it all.

good. hot. abundant. lots. not really. preppy.

lol how detailed

my friend says Duke rocks the social scene. he says he's having more fun than any of his friends at other colleges (including Clemson, a pretty big party school)

i am absolutely having the time of my life here at duke.

some people study on a saturday night, i think i only did once, and that was because i had a final on monday morning (and i still went out to a club afterwards). if you want alcohol, it will definitely be flowing somewhere (during bball season, the booze flows like water at k-ville). i don't think there is tremendous high school like cliques, but i mean, i have a very tight group of best friends and we certainly have our "high school" drama from time to time, but for the most part, people seem chill and open.

is the workload as unbearable as many ppl make it out to be? what would you change about duke if you could change anything? what is ur fav thing about duke?? how is greek life..?

is there stuff to do if you dont drink?

Would you say that Charlotte Simmons is about Duke mostly

ha i hope it isn't!

for the workload... it really depends on the classes you take and your work ethic. my friend switched from pratt to trinity and she saw that the workload dropped drastically. however, my roommate and i are both in trinity and she seems to be doing far more work than i do. (my classes are primarily reading/discussion based, so i seem to always have a book in hand, whereas her classes require frequent problem sets). i mean, there will be a lot of work in pretty much all classes and in all majors, and i have definitely pulled a few all nighters in the past semester, but all in all, i find it more or less quite managable.

there's a lot of stuff to do if you don't drink. some of my close friends don't drink and don't really go out to the frat parties or tailgates, and they still have a blast. there's a lot of non-drinking alternatives, and even at a party, sometimes there's dancing and just a lot of socializing that choosing not to drink is never a problem.

i find that the definition of "party" varies a lot here. From hall parties with alcohol flowing on west to off campus frat house keg parties to nights at places like parizades or shooters "hosted" by various campus groups to standing in the cold in k-ville, playing beirut...they all have different feels. At clubs, not everyone is drinking because, unless you have an id or friends that do/are over 21, you won't be. That means, if you don't feel like drinking, you by no means have to. but at the same time, it's always an option. you can decide if you want to party every night or just weekends or once a month.

and from what i've heard about charlotte simmons (i haven't read it)...there are parts of duke like that...not to mention parts of every other university. i wouldn't worry about it.

and there's a big difference between majors within trinity...i.e. econ and psychology, physics and sociology. so you are in control of your workload...choose your classes wisely, as well as if you want to go pre-med.
