Any comments on the of social life at Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth, Duke, Penn or Brown? Quality of ladies, prevalence/abundance/lack of alcohol? Lot of time spent studying on Saturday night? High-school-esque cliquiness? Preppiness/anti-preppiness?

I wouldn't actually be so quick to say Dartmouth has the best social life. It depends on what you're looking for. If fraternities and sororities and such are more your scene, then places like Dartmouth and Duke have social atmospheres based around them. If you're more interested in social life based around parties from organizations, interactions w/ many other colleges and city life in general, then Harvard or Columbia (I dunno personally about Columbia but just from it's location) may be a better fit.

As far as Harvard goes, there's no preppy atmosphere that I've ever noticed. Some people occassionally study on weekends but only generally in states of emergency (huge papers, midterms, etc.). There's lots of finals club hopping on campus (though social life is in no way centered around them, don't believe the hype). Alcohol is readily available (though I have no idea where it all comes from), and people don't seem particularly cliquey. We also go to parties on other campuses and go into Boston to go to clubs, see movies, etc. It's a blast.

Just as a sidenote, my knowledge is based mainly on the black social life experience at Harvard, so I can't necessarily say I speak for the whole campus. But I don't feel like the experience of the student body as a whole is much different than that.

'Some people occasionally study on weekends but only generally in states of emergency'?!?

Are you serious? I don't go to Harvard, but I've visited, and I get the impression that most schools in this academic range have students who do quite a bit of studying during the daytime on weekends. For me personally, it's when I do the bulk of my massive assigned readings. Now, it might be fair to say that most students don't study at night on the weekends unless they are in a jam.
