what is ur typical social scene with MHC girls? ive heard a variety of responses but im just afraid that most girls spend time partying and getting drunk off campus because im not really planning on doing that all the time and I want to make friends with ppl who don't just need to drink and party to have a good time....

Kathleen,

At any college you will find that people do party and drink. My daughter is a senior and spends the majority of her time studying. It is a very serious school and expects the most out of its students. If your education is important, then MHC would be a good choice for you.

I would second Shiblet's response. My daughter is a junior and spends the majority of her time studying. Mount Holyoke provides wonderful opportunities and expects students to strive to make the most of their experience. Remember, every college will have a "party crowd"...from what I hear from my daughter, she is certainly doesn't feel "left out" because she is not part of that scene. In fact, I think you'll find most students in the library or some other study area much of the weekend.

I just spoke with my daughter. She figures she spends about 75% of her time studying on the weekends and the rest with activites, hanging out with friends, etc.

Hey, Kathleen. I think it really depends. I know tons of people who stay in on the weekend, others who go out Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, and lots more who do something in-between. For example, Thursday night I didn't go out at all, but Friday afternoon and evening my friends and I decided to take a shopping day. So we went to Northampton for a little bit to check out a few little stores and get gelato, then we went to the Salvation Army, and after we went to the Holyoke Mall and Target. After we got back to campus, we got dinner in Blanchard, our student center, and then had a sleepover in my friend's room. The next day I slept in while my friends took a crazy long trip to Ikea in CT (one of my friends had never been there, so she was super excited for the trip :)). On the way back from their trip they dropped off one friend in Northampton for the Prop 8 protest (I was still sleeping during all of this lol). After this, some of us did homework and a few napped and did other things in our rooms. And today I'm wasting some time online and doing a lot of my assigned readings. I can't remember exactly what I did last weekend, but it probably involved studying and a movie night. :)

Even the partiers here are really casual about everything. The friends I have who go out to UMass frat parties or whatever are still into hanging out on campus too. And if you're not into something, nobody will care. My friends are totally understanding if one of us needs to skip some things to study for a test or write a paper. We all understand why we're really here.

Hope this helped!

Daughter is a senior and studies like a fiend. Liquor stores will not deliver kegs to campus, but there are those who like to drink. Four years ago daughter met a transfer from Fordham which to her, was all booze all the time, and she liked MHC much better.

Hey Kathleen,
Its like everyone said, there are people who drink and party on campus. I think there are less at Mount Holyoke then, say, UMass. There are plenty of people who like to have fun with out drinking, myself one of them. There are also plenty of dances and parties sponsered by MHC that don't incude drinking. So whatever you're into, there will be people who like the same things.
Also, most of the drinking parties are off campus, so if you're worried about the campus being crazy, dont be. It's very peaceful. But there are places you can go if you want excitement.
