Social Life at Middlebury

I’m planning to apply to Middlebury College, but I have a few questions that I hope someone can answer.

What is a typical Midd kid?

What does the typical student do for fun on the weekends?

How is diversity (economic, racial, social) on campus?

How many hours does a typical Middlebury student study each day?

Thanks in advance. :)

I'm not sure if there is such a thing as a typical Middkid, although the majority of students are outgoing, outdoorsy, like to have fun, and very intelligent. Many people also comment that Middlebury students are a very good looking group. Most Midd students work very hard during the week (3-4 hours of homework a night), then party on the weekends.

Most of the students are white, although there is a large percentage of international students. A lot of kids are from New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, California, Colorado, Illinois, and Connecticut.

On the weekends, most students stay on campus and attend the numerous plays, concerts, films, dance parties, or dorm/social house parties. A lot of kids go hiking, fishing or canoeing in the fall and spring, and ski, ice skate, or sled in the winter. There are always people going to Burlington, Montreal, or Boston on weekends or during breaks.

The student body is not as diverse as at other schools (like Wesleyan), but the administration is really making an effort to increase diversity. 40% of students are on financial aid, so not everyone is rich and preppy (although you'll find a lot of that).

Middlebury students are, for the most part, very happy, and really love their school.

The academics are quite rigorous, and you'll find that you'll always have a lot of work to do (but this partly depends on your major). Many kids spend the entire weekend in the library or science center, while others kind of coast by--but you'll find this at any top school.

I hope I answered some of your questions!

Arcadia:

Mahalo! You definately have answered some of the questions I had about Middlebury.

I like the college a lot...my only real reservation now, after your thoughtful post is about financial aid. I do need some help to swing the cost of attending Middlebury if I'm blessed with an acceptance letter. I'ver heard some good and some bad about how Midd packages their aid, so I'm wondering if it would be to my benefit to apply RD rather than ED to the college.

Do you have any thoughts on the subject of aid? What would you recommend?

Again, thank you for your help. :)

If I were you, I'd apply RD (unless Midd was your clear first choice). There is very little statistical advantage to applying early to Midd--the ED and RD acceptance rates are much more similar than at other schools.

You've probably also heard about the $50 million anonymous donation to Midd this past spring, which was quickly followed by another $10 million donation. A large percentage of the $50 million is earmarked for improving financial aid, so I wouldn't be surprised if Midd is more generous with aid in the next few years. But I could be wrong. If you're unhappy with your fin aid decision, you can always appeal. They will bend over backwards sometimes for students that they really want...

Arcadia...

Mahalo for your insight and advice about Middlebury.

The College is at the top of my list, tied (with Bowdoin and Amherst), although I did ED to the school in MA. I've been tossing around withdrawing my ED application to Amherst, because the more contact and information I get about Middlebury (and Bowdoin), the more I like the two. I have several days to decide, so it will be interesting. My friends and parents, on the other hand, think I'm crazy. I do still like Amherst but, in truth, it is starting to become less appealing. I know that if I yank my app at Amherst, it will likely be the kiss of death.

I guess, life is always interesting, right? Again, thank you for your insight.

:)
