Social life at NYU?

Hi guys

Was just rejected from Wharton ED.
Am thinking of applying ED II to Stern.
The only thing that is really holding me back is the social life at NYU. Heard that it’s pretty bad.
Can anyone in NYU/knows NYU well comment? Thanks a ton!!

What specifically do you want to know about NYU’s social life?

@seeniebeenie

Is it difficult to make friends at NYU?
Do people at NYU just go to class and go back home/to their dorms after which? Or do they hang out somewhere in NYC after classes?
Are people at NYU social in general?
How does the lack of a campus at NYU affect the social life at NYU?

During the beginning, no, it’s not difficult to make friends. Everyone’s so anxious about making friends and fitting in that they literally will post in the NYU Class of ___ Facebook group asking for people to do things with them. As time goes on and people settle into their friend groups and routines, it can be hard to make new friends, but that’s what clubs are for.

I mean, we’re here for school. Most people go home after class and then will go out with their friends to do stuff. No one lugs backpacks around the city when we can literally drop them off at home and meet our friends somewhere. Some people go to work or an internship after class.

Define “social”. It’s college, not high school, so you’re not going to make friends by sitting down next to someone in a dining hall and talking to them. People walk around with headphones on so others don’t bother them. I’ll talk to the people sitting next to me before or after class, but I don’t strike up a conversation with people in line at a dining hall if that’s what you’re asking.

We have a campus, it’s just spread out. Washington Square Park is our main campus hub, so people will say “I’ll meet you on campus” and mean in that area. It can get a bit annoying when you want to hang out with a friend and they live in Gramercy (the NYU res hall furthest uptown on 23rd) and you live in Lafayette (the NYU res hall furthest downtown in Chinatown on Lafayette), and neither one of you wants to travel, but you make it work.

Honestly, when in doubt, join a club. I joined a sorority my freshman year and it was the best decision I ever made here.
