Hello. I've recently been accepted to Stony Brook University and I'm definitely considering going there but I've read that many people keep to themselves at Stony Brook. And I'm kind of shy too, so this issue is kind of a concern to me. Please post your experiences about Stony Brook!

I am a commuter (which makes it hard enough to meet people) and I am very shy. The best thing I can tell you is that if you do end up going here, make friends at the orientation and during your freshman seminar course. Everyone else is in the same boat as you during that time.

If you can manage to be social during the 2 one-day sessions of orientation, do it! During the first day of orientation, I was at a table of ~10 people with all different backgrounds, majors etc. and most of us still remain friends. It’s a lot easier to make friends and meet people when everyone is in the same boat, also you’re stuck with the same people at orientation for about 5 hours.

This also applies to the first few days of classes, even when you’re not a freshman.

Some of the clubs I have been to have been cliquey, but most people in clubs are nice and open to meeting new people.

Honestly, at least for me (as a commuter), at times it seems very much like most people just come here for class and then rush back home. It’s kind of discouraging especially as someone who is shy.

Pretty much you get out what you put in, but that probably applies to every campus in the world.
