Social Life at Schools: Carnegie Mellon, University of Michigan, etc.

Hi! I just have been accepted to a few colleges and I want to know about the social life there to make my decision. I'm going between Harvey Mudd, Carnegie Mellon, Northwestern, and the University of Michigan. What do you all think?

Thanks.

Hello!
I’m a current junior living in Pittsburgh, and I know a few current CMU students, so I hope my two cents help you in your decision.

CMU is notorious for its academic-centered student life. There are plenty of clubs and student organizations, with a strong Greek life, but it definitely does not have a “party scene”. Going to CMU means that you will not be getting the usual eight hours of sleep; late nights and all-nighters are guaranteed. The campus location and size is nice - it’s in a very chill part of Pittsburgh, and there are good restaurants and things to do nearby. Keep in mind that Pittsburgh is not a very “city”-like place. Maybe it’s because I’ve lived here for so long, but I’d say that it’s a pretty boring city. But the current CMU students whom I’ve talked to really like CMU and think that there are plenty of things to do, so don’t take my word for it. To add, if you dislike unpredictable, dreary, gray weather, then CMU/ Pittsburgh is not the place for you! The weather is absolutely awful.

Despite its locational flaws, the CMU-atmosphere is admirable and lively. I would definitely recommend visiting!
