For those that are attending the school, how is the social life at Stony Brook? I was searching through the clubs list and found it really disappointing that virtually no club had a website nor information online as to when they meet, how to join, etc. Does anyone know if clubs meet regularly and if they are worth frequenting?

Lastly, how is the social mingling at the school? I know the student body is extremely diverse, but do ethnic groups tend to cling together and shut off to other people (i.e. only speak chinese/arabic/spanish amongst themselves)? Also, I know this is vain, but how good looking is the student body--are there mainly average looking people? And how is the party/dating scene on campus?

I am considering going to the school and this would really help me get a feel for the atmosphere at stony brook.

I hear, for the most part that it's lonely and sad
one friend of mine had an anxiety attack
someone else told me it's social suicide
someone else, a doctor, told me it's what you make of it
it's also in between the city and the hamtons

How about you hear it from a student (like me) instead of listening to a bunch of "I heards".

The social life is good from what I've seen so far. Lots of intermingling amoung enthicities (btw, SBU is probably one of the most diverse schools in the world), always something going on on campus...etc. Very large asian population. Lecture halls are huge and you should start to make friends in the very beginning. My advice - just BE FRIENDLY and OPEN and SMILE....you WILL make friends. If you see a girl/guy sitting alone, go sit with them and talk to them. They will like you for that.

It's what you make of it in the end. I don't know why people worry about social life. People are people, it's not like they change from one college to another. If you are friendly, you will get friends.

I found housing....a little converted garage on the side of someone's house. Yeah it sucks, I really had no choice though. I am paying 950$ a month (which to me is ridiculous cuz she doesn't allow roomates).

I really hate living here and can't wait to be on campus. Good thing it's only for a year.

In a way, its good that I hate the room, because I stay on campus from 8-6pm, and I am becoming more confident in making friends....I am there all day cuz I don't wanna go back to the apartment!
