I know a lot about the academics and education at UCI, but one thing I have not been able to get a straight answer about is the social life. I hear the social life is low so students go elsewhere and I also heard many students leave on the weekends. I am interested to find out: how big/wild the party scene is, how active the campus is on weekends and what's the best way to get the most out of a social life at UCI

The social places in Irvine itself are probably limited to… Campus itself, your apartment/dorm/house, University Town Center, Diamond Jamboree, and Spectrum. Irvine is mostly houses, apartments, and corporate high rises. Luckily it’s surrounded by many other cities which there are things to do and many places to hang out… LA, Newport, Tustin, Anaheim etc.

Weekends are alright, people are stuck from NorCal and forced to be friends with you during that time.

The social life is not that low and you’ll become “social” if you allow yourself to be open to other groups of people especially in your residential hall(where I learned how to be more social and open). You can also socialize in many campus organizations such as Circle K or the numerous cultural clubs under the Cross Cultural Center(there are plenty of clubs with who share similar interests), and many cultural clubs go out clubbing too. There are also fraternities and sororities whether they be for service or Greek and Asian(the partying scene). Drinking parties are somewhat common in some of the residential halls if that matters to you.

During the weekends, it is quiet and empty but the housing communities create activities and events for the entire community so it would be less boring(e.g.[in middle earth] a quidditch tournament on pelennor fields, ice skating, Sadie Hawkins dance, etc.). And since many students are from NorCal, your Norcal hallmates will most likely stay in the hall with you giving you opportunities to hang out. It would also be nice to make a friend in your hall who has a car haha, which is probably the only way(other than walking or taking the bus) to travel to other destinations in or around Irvine(the Spectrum, Fashion Island, Tustin, Newport, Anaheim[wooh Disneyland ^^], LA, and the rest of Irvine with all its suburban perfection lol).

Is it worth it for me to use my savings to BUY a car to bring? I want a decent social life and I wanna be able to visit my friends at UCLA, etc… (I think I just answered my own question). But, will people be mooching off of me just because I have a car? I’d love to drive people around, but I don’t want that to be like the primary thing, ya know?

i think you definitely would appreciate being in orange county more if you could actually go out and see it and get used to the city… life is kinda dull if you’re on campus all the time

sooo there are parties at uci right? i consider myself to be social/a partier and im scared of moving to college where my high school social life is better…

I’m from the valley, but I love Los Angeles and I’ll have no car.
Do many people like to travel to LA on the weekends? Will I more likely to have friends who like to go to LA?
