I was accepted to UVa and would love to attend, but my mom is starting to worry me telling me to go to Stern at NYU by saying that there's nothing to do at UVa after a while. I'm sure this is false, but what is the social life like at Virginia? What do you do on the weekends, or other nights? Sorry if there's already a thread on this :-]

I have heard that UVA kids quite like to party. Most Southern Schools are famous for having fun. Charlottesville is an incredible town! Really cute shops and definitely a hippie vibe. When I visited I fell in love with the town just not the school (I visited during the summer…twas very hot). Charlottesville has lots of music and great food. I don’t think the social aspect will be a problem.

You can do the whole party-and-blackout thing at frat houses, swim at the AFC, go to random arts and theatre events, go to the observatory and stargaze (probably you can’t do this at NYU!), hike/camp, hop onto CTS busses and shop. There are always lots of events going on, and they’re advertised by chalk, facebook, flyer or on the table-tents at O’Hill.

That is, if your weekend isn’t being consumed by all-nighters and tough courseloads. (Then you and your friends will probably be ordering take-out delivery to Clemons Library instead.)

There are almost 200 000 people in the metro area of Charlottesville (according to wikipedia), so I am not worried about social life & events at all. Besides, Richmond is only 62 miles away.

Lots to do…yes. Cute town…yes. Hippie vibe…definitely no. More prep than hip.

200,000 really? I thought 40,000 was the metro figure estimate, not the only-downtown figure. That must explain why Emmet North/Rt 29 is so bloody busy and so bloody hard to cross even at 2100h. There’s an insane amount of cars when you get as far north as Fashion Square (or actually right after the overpass near the Asian market at 1417 Emmet) and you have to basically play Frogger to cross it cuz there are no official pedestrian crossings.

[Charlottesville metropolitan area - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Charlottesville, Virginia metropolitan area - Wikipedia)
that figure includes the 4 neighboring counties… aka you’re not going to fluvanna county on the weekend for anything haha. you’d go to dc first.
