What are the pros and cons of social life at each school? How do the two compare?

This was originally about MIT grad school so not directly relevant but I can't resist:

"I came to MIT for the social life."
"But there is no social life at MIT."
"I was misinformed." :)

MIT = cambridge and boston
caltech = pasadena

MIT wins

[quote]
I came to MIT for the social life.
But there is no social life at MIT.
I was misinformed.

Not quite as amusing as the original:

[quote]
Captain Renaud: What in heaven's name brought you to Casablanca?
Rick: My health; I came to Casablanca for the waters.
Captain Renaud: The waters? What waters? We're in the desert.
Rick: I was misinformed.

MIT>Caltech in terms of social life.

drunner, could you elaborate a little on what kind of social experience you're looking to have in college? (Or if that's too vague, just a few words on the type of person you are?)

Neither MIT or Caltech is better for all people, so it might help to have some information about you. I also hope Ben G. will speak up, since he's probably the only one of us regular posters to have spent significant time at both MIT and Caltech.

well although i'm big into math and physics i don't tend to act nerdy. i don't mind talking about these subjects for long periods of time, but i would also want a normal social life.
i know that both mit and caltech have students with a quirky sense of humor. i'm not sure if that would be my thing. i guess i'd be ok with it as long as there are enough people that act a little more normal.

Well.. I think I'd have to recommend MIT. Remember that MIT is roughly 10x as big as Caltech, so you are much more likely to find a group of friends that are similar to you...

Also, from what I've seen, Caltech students seem to be, on average, a bit odder (good IMO, probably not so good in your opinion) than MIT.

As someone who is friends with that student and was there during the filming of that video... he is quite a bit nerdier than the average Techer, which is why it was so funny when he spontaneously started singing along with the Egg Song when someone played it. ;)
