Growing up in the south, the social life of the state flagships seemed to revolve around football during the Fall. Actually the social life of elementary, middle, and high schools revolved around the state flagship’s football team during the fall.

The point is football is a large part of the college experience at southern flagships.

I get the feeling it is different at ASU though because the stadium is half empty in a lot of images I have seen.

So how large of a part would you say football plays in the social life of the University during the fall?

I think it’s actually bigger than you’d think. It’s nothing like the South, but a lot of students don’t want to put up the money for the season tickets at the stadium, so they go to bars/tailgates around Tempe on gamedays, which are both cooler (trust me…being in an enclosed stadium for 5+ hours when it’s 100+ degrees during half the season gets quite exhausting!) and sometimes an easier meeting place for friends. At least that’s how I see it.

I agree with christalena2, I think football at ASU is still a large part of fall semester. On Thursdays they always have a pep rally for the upcoming game and on game days they march from the SRC (student gym) across campus to the stadium. Also, the student section at football games is always really lively and a lot of fun! If the social scene/football at a university is important to you then I would definitely check out some videos online, ASU isn’t like the South but it is a lot of fun still! Good luck with your decision :)
