Social Life / Frats

my son had a great feeling when he visited muhl last fall . very welcoming and warm schools and liked the kids and the "fit".... received great financial package with presidential and talent award and with other grants and aid bringing it close to what he would be paying at SUNY Binghamton as instate. As he is interested in the sciences. I feel that he will get a better science education at Muhl as it is better know for their science programs and professors who will be more dedicated, caring and will work closer with students than those at a larger schools like Binghamton. Potentially as well he would have a higher GPA at a smaller school like Muhl and thus a better chance to get into the very competitive dental schools which is his current career path..

He is also a musician and would play in the jazz band and some other ensembles as well - saxophones.

He feels the weekend social life, including frats and the fact that he would probably like to play club lax would be better at bing . (bing has club- muhl has varsity and don't know how competitive that is ) ... He thinks both will be better at a larger school. He feels comfortable that he knows many at Binghamton current freshman and incoming freshman fall 2014 like himself and none at Muhlenberg . His other choice is Tulane but thus far the cost is a lot higher even with merit and financial aid and would put out out of reach financially and travel expenses high . We are from long island ny. I want him to visit again in 2 weeks for the admitted student program . He has gotten into many schools and nice merit money but has taken then off his list for variety of reasons. Any thoughts would be appreciated and helpful ... not many topics on the forums for Muhlenberg .

@matthewcollege, I don’t have much to add, except that we are in a similar position with my D. She intends to major in English and possibly dabble in theatre, and has been invited to join Muhlenberg Scholars. She has narrowed down her choices to Muhlenberg (most affordable), Denison ($2k more), and Oberlin ($16k more). We will also visit on accepted students day…then decision time. Best of luck to your son!

@matthewcollege, your first paragraph is spot on. My D had Geneseo as an option, but Muhlenberg won out. The opportunities have been amazing. First win for Mberg is attention from professors and staff, and that’s a big win in my book.

@sschickens, Muhlenberg is amazing for theatre. Oberlin would be the place for focus on music and the arts scene in general. Mberg has a nice balance with science majors and a great theatre program.

As far as club lacrosse, I don’t think Mberg has that. The varsity lax is pretty competitive, but being from LI is a bonus as the LI standard of play is among the best in the nation. There are a bunch of LI players on the team, so he can compare if he is at caliber (look at their high schools and profiles to match up). With or without lacrosse, I would encourage any soon to be college freshman to leave out ‘knowing someone going to the college’ as a reason to go to that school.

Go to revisit day. Then compare. My experience is you won’t find as nice a welcome at a SUNY - and our experience is that the welcome extends to the general experience in classes. Best of luck.

If there is any indecision on anyone’s part, I strongly recommend accepted students day. It is a great opportunity to meet the entire Muhlenberg community. Talk to everyone, ask all of your questions, check out the clubs and extra curricular opportunities, talk with the department you are potentially going to major in, talk with current students and staff about what they like and don’t like. Then get a cup of coffee and just sit and watch, see how the school really interacts… students, teachers, staff, employees, everyone. See if you can picture yourself, or your child, attending… At the end of the day I think you will know, one way or another, but you will know if it feels right for you. Best of luck.

Please don’t take the lack of topics on the forum as a sign of what the school has to offer. Remember, Muhlenberg is a very small school, and most smaller schools with their own forum on CC tend to not have as many threads/posts. Muhlenberg also has a large percentage of students apply (and be accepted) ED, so perhaps not as many who are even comparing it with other schools.
